View Full Version : What's the Best Steam Deal on Oblivion, and Why?

So I'm looking at a few different options here on Steam for an Oblivion purchase:
The first option is the "Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition" for 29.99$, and is here:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/22330/
There's also option 2, the "Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition Deluxe" for 34.99$ which is shown here:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/900883/
So there we go. I know there's a 44$ pack that also includes the game "Morrowind" but I'm not particularly interested in that...so.. between the two examples, which do you Oblivion players think is the best deal?
On the "Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition Deluxe" page, it says it has:
"This English-only Deluxe version includes the following Downloadable Content (DLC)"
... and a long list of (supposedly?) free content you get with the purchase. And the Game of the Year Edition Deluxe pack is 34$ as opposed to the 29$ "Game of the Year Edition" Oblivion pack. Both seem to come with the two expansions to Oblivion right? (Knights of the Nine and the Shivering Isles or whatever?)
So the Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition Deluxe apparently comes with more game content, but it also costs 5$ more. Which is the best deal, and why?
Also importantly, I am trying to avoid installing that SecuROM software, so keep that in mind when advising me please :). Which purchase is better and why?

None of the games have the SecuROM that screws with your computer. There's no need when Steam itself is DRM. You might find a SecuROM remnant in the files, but it's not actively shutting down apps and limiting installs, like some of the more complete versions do.
Now that that's out of the way...get the deluxe edition. The deluxe content is worth more than $5, and there are actually mods for them. So like the rest of the content, you can get more value out of it. What I usually do is install all of the unofficial patches (3 patches - base Oblivion, Shivering Isles, and DLC/deluxe), then I install the mod that associates real quests with the deluxe content so that they don't automatically pop up at the beginning of the game and spoil the atmosphere. Example: the Horse Armor voucher is usually given to you from thin air as soon as you leave the first dungeon. With the mod, that voucher is placed in inns and taverns to be discovered around the game world.

And does Steam automatically download the content as it does with other updates and addons and stuff?

Not sure if the 10$ would be better spent on some other game.. don't really like the name, and it sounds like the game is kindof dumbed down (its T... Oblivion was rated M). Sure some RPGs are good and T (like Neverwinter Nights) but idk. The T rating makes me think I won't like it like Oblivion, but I've heard Morrowind is good for some of the same reasons I heard Oblivion was good... lots of freedom to do whatever you want in the game and its non-linear and stuff... But yeah... T... ew. Not to mention it's apparently old (I just looked at some of the screenshots). It doesn't look good like Oblivion.

Yes, it does. Though as with other updates to games, there's no way to remove Steam DLC; if you own it, it will always be associated with the game. It's not a separate item.

The stuff you get in the deluxe version is mostly superficial, silly stuff. It adds things like the infamous horse armor and a few buildings with a few gimmicks. I don't think it's worth paying for, but your mileage may vary.
it sounds like the game is kindof dumbed down (its T... Oblivion was rated M).
If anything, Oblivion is the dumbed down version of Morrowind, not the reverse.
If the rating is what matters to you (I don't see what it has to do with being dumbed down, but anyway...) you might care to know that the ESRB actually originally gave Oblivion a T rating as well, but after third party mods adding nudity to NPC characters were released, the rating was changed to an M. I don't really understand the difference, since I believe there are also downloadable mods for Morrowind that also add nudity, but there you have it.

If I knew nothing about Morrowind and watched the trailer on Steam, I wouldn't want to buy it - the game looks like ♥♥♥ compared to Oblivion.

Well, yeah, morrowind is much older.
It's basically the grand daddy of Oblivion, not as pretty, kind of a curmudgeon at first, but much deeper.
Spend the extra 5 bucks and get the deluxe pack, morrowind is agreat extra 200 hours of game.

When Morrowind first came out it had high end graphics. Time goes on.

You think I don't know that? You guys don't need to defend the old game. I'm just making an observation based on the OP's remarks.

I'd say go with the Deluxe pack b/c I got the standard GOTY edition thinking the KotN had all the same stuff that the disc had, but it didnt. Besides it's one of the only ways to get all the plug-ins (including Fighter's Stronghold)because www.obliviondownloads.com has been "down for maintenance" for almost a month. I'd say get the deluxe edition, cuz later on you'll be sorry you didn't and won't be able to get the extra DLC. Whether you get Morrowind is up to you. Good Luck

don't really like the name
Is there really something objectionably wrong with "Morrowind"? Cause I can't for the life of me see it. Either way buying games by the title doesn't really sound like the way to go.
it sounds like the game is kindof dumbed down
Funny you should say that, because Oblivion is actually a dumbed down version of Morrowind, the world is smaller, there are less things to do, and there are less spells.
But yeah... T... ew.
So do you base ALL your game purchases from game title and rating? And here I thought people wanted things like features and content.
Not to mention it's apparently old (I just looked at some of the screenshots). It doesn't look good like Oblivion.
Let me get this straight, your priority list for games (from most important to least important) looks a little something like this?
1. Game title
2. ESRB Rating
3. Graphics
If that really is the case then I suddenly understand why crap like MW2 is even allowed to exist.
P.S I realize I'm a year late here, but I ran into the topic when I was googling if Steam Oblivion had SecuROM or not.

and here is another reason why I tell people to go to the Beth Soft forums for help...this forum doesn't move much so you see very few posts and old threads stay on the front page.
