NOTICE: Version 2 is no longer functional or supported. Read the thread (posts starting around November, 2010) for more information regarding the upcoming version 3 for Safari / Google Chrome

NOTICE: While the link to the script in this OP remains current, some of the other information in the OP (especially screen shots) is outdated. Please read through the thread for updates.

Yea, so remember that php script I wrote a while back that no one trusted (understandably)? I wrote some javascript that does the same thing, and actually looks better, in my opinion.

Firefox Greasemonkey Script: SPUFCommunityIntegration.min.user.js (http://seirmubsa.com/tmp/SPUFCommunityIntegration/SPUFCommunityIntegration.min.user.js)

Screenshots: 01 (http://seirmubsa.com/tmp/SPUFCommunityIntegration/01.png) | 02 (http://seirmubsa.com/tmp/SPUFCommunityIntegration/02.png) | 03 (http://seirmubsa.com/tmp/SPUFCommunityIntegration/03.png) | 04 (http://seirmubsa.com/tmp/SPUFCommunityIntegration/04.png) | 05 (http://seirmubsa.com/tmp/SPUFCommunityIntegration/05.png) | 06 (http://seirmubsa.com/tmp/SPUFCommunityIntegration/06.png) | 07 (http://seirmubsa.com/tmp/SPUFCommunityIntegration/07.png) | 08 (http://seirmubsa.com/tmp/SPUFCommunityIntegration/08.png) (Actual usage starts at 03... 01-02 are setup)

The downside to this client-side process: Non-collective caching results in more requests. There is a little bit of a performance hit when you first start using it. :P

If you're logged into steamcommunity.com in the same browser that you use this script in, it should show you more information about the user. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm referring to profiles with privacy set to 'friends-only' and a few quirks.

Oh, yea... Cache time for community data is 5 minutes; 1 hour for forum data. Currently, the only way to clear the "cache" is to remove each individual item, one at a time, or just "uninstall" and "reinstall" the script.

The script is a total failure

A few things I don't really like:
- Using the community name and then putting the forum name under it. I prefer it the other way around as it's easier for identification of forum users.
- The parsing error looks bad and it's not really needed. If there's no avatar it's pretty obvious they don't have a profile.
- Avatars are centered instead of left-aligned.
- The big avatars. Anyways for you to pull _medium.jpg instead of _full.jpg?

Constructed criticism is appreciated, "l0lz1t5ux0rz" isn't.

I'm going to add options into it for things such as our first and second bullets (defaulting to the way yu have specified). As for the last two, I though it looked bad with the avatar left-aligned, so I centered it. I'll make it an option as well, or possibly make the avatar fill the horizontal space.

There also seems to be an issue when submitting a post editation via ajax (it removes the community elements)... I already have it listening for DOM insertions, but it appears as though the vB javascript is doing something I haven't expected... I'll have to trace the code to see what's causing it (It's obviously not doing a new insert, or the script would catch it).

Edit: Medium avatars are only 64x64, the ones I display are 125x125... so the script must request the large ones. :P

Yea, sorry about that... When I minified (stripped out all the unnecessary linebreaks/carriage returns, whitespaces, comments... etc) the previous version you had, I forgot to readd the comments at the beginning that Greasemonkey reads when it first "installs" the script.

I'm debating over adding support to display images linked in posts (Sized down, of course) and a few other things.

Did you manually collect Steam Community IDs for individual forum members for this, or are you using the ones provided in the account profile?

The original PHP version (the one I did a long time ago that was on suf.seirmubsa.com) worked off of a MySQL db that I populated myself, but this one is all client side... it retrieves the users's forum profile to check if they've listed one.

I also think you might get more 'publicity' out of this, so to speak, if you post it in Off-Topic, since that's where a lot of regulars hang out.

Anyone made it work with opera?
The more I think about it, the more I don't think it's going to work correctly in Opera. The script relies on Greasemonkey's special functions, specifically GM_xmlhttprequest, GM_setvalue and gm_getvalue. I'm not entirely sure how well that "place holder" script supposedly works.

Unfortunately, the point of the GM functions is to provide more unrestrictve access than normal javascript. For instance, GM_xtmlHttpRequest allows requests across other domains and the GM_setValue and GM_getValue allow you to "store" values for use across multiple requests, all three of which are vital for the operation of this script.

Why only partly? If you are talking about how some postbits lack avatars, it's because the poster hasn't filled out the field in their forum profile.
As for your last comment: Yes, I designed it that way.

As people requested, I turned off error reporting, so you can't really tell this.
Anyways, the link you entered into your forum profile matches the pattern, so the script accepted it. However, when it retrieved the page, it failed to parse it. Go to the link you entered into your forum profile and you'll see why.
The specified profile could not be found.
I'll enable error reporting for errors regarding the user's profiles in the next version.

This is a good GreaseMonkey Script. It's also amazing how many people don't set their SteamIDs on their Forum Profiles.
If they're a regular member (One who posts regularly), beat them until they do, if not, it can't be helped.

Loving the script, but I've found a bug.

When you get a new PM it puts your name in place of the number of new PM's you have.

Would be great if you could fix this.

I forgot to mention last post..
Since I'm weird and anything not blending in nicely annoys me, I took the liberty to create a couple of animated loading .gifs for your script.

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa55/ultradude25/loading.gif
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa55/ultradude25/loading2.gif
(You may want to host them yourself just in-case something happens to my photobucket.)

loading.gif is for the loading of other peoples info and loading2.gif is for the header when it's loading your info (The background is brighter and transparent animated .gifs hate me).

I've already edited them into your code and it looks a lot better than the one with a black background.

Oh and the script seems to indefinitely try to load someone's image if they have specified the wrong URL in their info (Where it goes to the page saying "Specified Steam Profile not found").

Yea, i just kinda threw that GIF in there. I'll look into using your images. As for the indefinetly loading imagers for non-existant profiles: are you sure you didn't break it with your edits? If turn on erreo reporting, it just gives the community passing error. Give me the forum user ID and the broken community link they list and I'll look into it.

Updated Again.
There are two major changes, and I've taken a step towards settings.

The config variables that are settable (I haven't made a GUI to change them yet, you can change them in about:config, though) are listed below. ...They're in a spoiler tag because they give away the two major new things. >_>

setting_forumProfileCacheTime
setting_communityProfileCacheTime
setting_goToAnchors
setting_maxImageDimension
setting_signatureCharacterLimit
setting_signatureMaxHeight

(The base for these is "greasemonkey.scriptvals.http://seirmubsa.com//Steam Powered User Forums Community Integration.")

This is still annoying the heck out of me:

It appears as though you have not yet entered a valid, working steam community url into your forum profile.
Please do so as soon as possible by editing your profile (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/profile.php?do=editprofile).
Error:2:Error parsing forum profile (Invalid community URL?)

I've had this URL ( http://steamcommunity.com/id/zips/ ) the entire time as set up in my profile. I've not once seen my avatar =/

And yes, I've tried it with it logged in to the SC through firefox, and without.

It was because of the trailing slash. I just fixed it to allow a trailing slash and reuploaded it.
So how do we install the update?
The same way you installed it the first time. It should just overwrite it.

Also... The Faces thread in OT is... epic... but takes a little while to load. >_> The Desktop thread isn't so bad.

I imagine that your's is throwing errors like mine is... I just got on campus and it stopped working... Gotta track down the bug.
Anyways, when it's working properly, it will add a little downward pointing arrow (like the one next to "search" and "quick links"). Click it and it will bring up the settings menu for the particular forum(s)/thread.

Edit: The bug has something to do with detecting wether you are logged into the froums or not... Still tracking...

Edit 2: Found it... Patching.

No errors. Just didn't know how you brought up the menu.
When I click that arrow, there's only 3 options.

EDIT: sigs are enabled & yet I STILL cannot see mine, but I see yours.
Settings other than [Enable/Disable] [Avatars/Images/Signatures ] (like "Images - Max Dimension") are not hierarchical and are only available through the main forum options (The arrow next to "Steam Users' Forums"), meaning, while [Enable/Disable] [Avatars/Images/Signatures ] can be set for each individual forum/thread (and maybe user, in the future), all the other complementary settings are forum-wide.

As for your signature, you have not put anything in your community profile (http://steamcommunity.com/id/lordofdarkness/) to warrant a signature. :P

Update (Version 5)
Fixed a few bugs. An installation like the previous version is not required (unless you didn't do i when you updated to version 4), but is suggested.

Changes:
*Fixed issue with settings being saved for a thread when using showthread.php?p= instead of showthread.php?t= (It was saving them as thread_(postid) instead of thread_(threadid).
*Replaced the loading image with a better one (Sorry, I'm not going to the vista one :P).
*Optimized a little.
*Changed the order of main settings list to be more useful.

To Come:
*Re-implement Google search with AJAX?
*Pink-heart replacement?
*Different smiley set?
*Youtube embedding (like the images)?
*Proprietary rep system?

Oh, yea... I forgot to mention... For the past two versions, there has been a Google search (http://seirmubsa.com/tmp/desktop/Screen%20shot%202009-09-30%20at%2010.53.36%20AM.png)

Please clarify. It gives errors on everyone's community lookups, or just your own? If the latter, you just need to void the cache of your profiles or wait for them to expire.

Constructive criticism is wanted. I already know I sound like I took a handful of speed before recording it, I couldn't be ♥♥♥♥ed to edit things out :)
The wireless at my university is being really patchy... and it's apparently "not a priority for ITS", so I'll have to watch it when I get home... The first bit I saw was... interesting...

If you guys really want me to, I'll add an option to replace the hearts with asterisks.

Also, I have realized that the choices I have provided for maximum signature height are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥... as they are not multiples of the line-height...

Going a little heavy on the user preferences there..

At this rate, you might as well seek for a way to integrate a database.. because this isn't going to be good on performance.

Was trying to figure out why signatures weren't being removed upon the removal of [spufsignature] tags.. now I know. :)

There is not way to do that, which is why I have to use GreaseMonkey's value functions. I am aware of the performance penalty. Either way, data would still be cached, so you would still have to void the cache or wait for it to expire.
Anyways, none of it would be necessary if they just went ahead and integrated the community.

Umm... I can think of two possibilities.
Either the script isn't following the redirect, or the odd characters in your community name are causing the XML parser to fail.

First, try setting the URL field in your forum profile to http://steamcommunity.com/id/mystrdat/
If that doesn't work, try changing your community name to regular characters.

Remember, you have to allow time for your cache to clear, or clear it yourself.
To clear it yourself, go to "about:config" and search for '495791" and reset all the values... I forgot to have the script attach "voice cache" options to non-community enabled profiles. :P

I'll be interested to learn what is the cause.

I have changed my name to not use any unicode chars, changed the url, reset the firefox vars (cleared cache)... and it still shows the same error. Might it be cause the URL parameter in about:config uses only the "id/nickname" value without any URL?

It's only supposed to store the last part of the URL.

The script is failing to parse your community profile once it retrieves it. I think it's because of the irregular characters because, when I view the XML with firefox, it trips up. :P

As of right now, it looks like one of your friend's data is messing it up "<steamID><![CDATA[f[r]aggod fakiyo]]></steamID>", specifically.

I can't say for sure because I'm in XP and all of the tools I use are OS X side. I should have a solution in a couple of days, depending how my classes go (today is the last day of my break), if you haven't figured it out by then.

You probrobly didn't let the end page of the edit profile load completely so that the javascript would execute to clear the cache of your profile. Either wait for the cache to expire, or try visiting usercp.php (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/usercp.php) (and let it load completely).

It's possible one of the other plugins is interfering. Nuttmegger had a lot of other stuff, too. The only plugins I roll with are NoScript, ABP, FireBug, and GreaseMonkey. Try disabling all but those, restarting firefox, and reinstalling the script (make sure to check "also uninstall associated preferences"), and giving it a go. If that doesn't fix it, it's not one of the other plugins.

If you are logged into the steam community in Firefox, it's possible that one of your friends that is "friends-only" is showing up in the xml with control-characters in their name, which makes xml invalid (I'm not sure if Steam has fixed this yet). Try logging out of the community in Firefox, reinstalling the script (make sure to check "also uninstall associated preferences"), and giving it a go. If that fixes it, it's an issue with invalid xml.

If it's anything other than those two things, it has me stumped.

Even reinstalling firefox didn't seem to fix it.

I had to wait about 14 hours for mine to work. Leave it for a day, and then see how it's doing.

You seriously just waited? You didn't change anything? That doens't make any sense.

Well, actually I uninstalled and re-installed firefox, but it still wasn't working after that (i.e. I had packman swearfiltering, all the menu options, and link embeds enabled, but no avatars- same as before). I then realised I had other things I should be doing, and went to school and after a couple of hours I thought 'what the hell', logged in to SPUF there, installed the script, where it also wasn't working. Later in the day, I went to another computer at uni and installed the script (yeah, I like messing with the uni's computers :D) and then it would randomly work.

By the time I got home it was working on my home pc.

I don't know! Thanks for the help, but computers are just crazy things sometimes.

Also, can I suggest in an update, you try to put placeholder boxes where the avatars go that will force the post sizes whilst loading the actual avatars, so that the page layout doesn't jump around on loading avatars? This will do a lot to help complaints about load times, as the page layout will settle earlier making the forum easier to read earlier in the load.

Sounds really... strange...

As for the placeholders, I've been trying to solve the issue of the page jumping around since day 1. However, adding a placeholder avatar means that even people who haven't linked their profiles will have their posts expanded. I'm actually thinking about making it inject the DOM elements with a height of 0 and having it "unfurl" them. It's up in the air, though. This wasn't a problem with my PHP/proxy version, as all the modifications were done on the server.

Perhaps Steam should just, you know, integrate the forums with the community. >_>

Well definitely: but I present 2 solutions:

1. Why not just make a 'no account info' default avatar? As long as it looks funky then it'd be prefered: something along the lines of:
This image (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KNwSiQHfOQs/RgDGGJKAsGI/AAAAAAAAAGw/Wn4IplCqP9Y/s320/technical_difficulties.jpg)

2. Isn't it possible to code "for blank steam profile entry / steam profile not blank" before you even go fetching for the community info to sort out which posts get avatar expansion and which don't.

I'll take it into consideration.

I'm still trying to figure out why you two have this random problem.

Well waiting hasn't solved the problem. About:config just has a long list of errors in it "Error parsing forum profile (Invalid community URL?)." The profile ID with the numbers in the URL doesn't work either for me.

nice script, I am sad that I do not use firefox unless on my usb stick at work. If you are interested when Chrome User scripts come out, convert this code over, nice stuff.

Oh, and this would be totally awesome if it would be DEFAULT function on steam forums! makes everything look sleek, I could find guys to be friends with and stuff. And for forum standpoint, it doesn't overflood the forum server with data storing avatars and stuff generate since that comes from steamcommunity DB.

so yes, really really nice script!

If they release Grease Monkey for Chrome, no porting will be necessary.

I, too, wish this were built into the forums (and not client side).

yeah, well I heard of a user script support incoming but not about what type, is it it's own scripting, a greasemonkey LIKE, or greasemonkey port. so that is still unclear.

Well, either way, it just has to provide the same functionality as Grease Monkey (Saving/retrieving information and cross-domain requests).

@KeRupTion & Nuttmegger: it's very weird, when I had the problem a re-install fixed it (I don't know why I had the problem, my Portable Firefox has almost the exact same set up and works fine).

When you un-installed Firefox, make sure you clear out everything; all history, preferences, etc. Bookmarks can be saved by going into Organise Bookmarks ([ctrl]+[shift]+[b]) and clicking [Import and Backup].

When you reinstall, make sure you have the latest version of Firefox. When re-adding your extensions, add Greasemonkey and the SPUF script first and ensure it works before adding the others.

So I just did a completely new reinstall, have added nothing but greasemonkey, and added the script and it still does not work. It must be a problem with either the script and how it gets the steam community data.

Edit: And now it just suddenly started working after waiting a bit. This script is weird. :)

I have a feeling it's control characters in the xml that you're getting.
That's the only explanation I can come up with.
