View Full Version : U-Boat Missions Addon Install Workaround

By sheer luck, I've discovered how to work around the install problem with my U-Boat missions expansion. This is what I did:
Delete the local game cache of the vanilla and expansion, and delete the folder too in steam.
Instal SH4. Let it reach 100%. Verify cache.
Now install U-Boat. Let it finish. Do NOT verify cache! This triggers both U-Boat and SH4 to start downloading, which is something you do not want! It never works for me if I try to install SH4 and U-Boat at the same time, or verify the U-Boat Cache.
Run U-Boat when it finishes. Should be working fine now.
EDIT: There seems to be an alternative too. Delete SH4 and U-boat if installed, then just install U-Boat by itself. It will automatically load SH4, but it will be at 100% and only U-Boat will actually be doing the downloading, which will probably prevent the conflict from occurring in the first place... I am testing this to confirm.
EDIT2: Works! Didn't even have to verify cache!
Edit 3: It's official! Got this from Ubisoft Support (with my name edited out):

To resolve this issue, you will first need to uninstall both games. After they have both been uninstalled, simply reinstall the Uboat expansion. This will automatically reinstall the original game as well, and leave you fully patched. Please do not attempt to install the original Silent Hunter game.
One final note:
Be wary if you install mods! You should probably back up your SH4 folder, cache verification doesn't restore damaged file integrity of the u-boat addon, it restores only vanilla SH4 files instead!

Hello fellow sub captains. ;)
I use this thread because i didnt want to create another one with this problem in it. Because there are enough, apparently.
None of this solutions work for me. I can neither play SH4 nor the u-boat addon.
In both cases, after the loading bar (the one after the intro movie) fills up completely, the screen turns black and nothing happens. I don't get the missing files messages anymore however, so maybe this is a problem unrelated to download/install-issues?
Even if i uninstall anything, then just load and verify ONLY SH4, it doesnt work. Please help, because god knows the STEAM support is not easily giving away refunds. Oh, and i wanna play the game, too... :)

That's probably a codec issue. I haven't had this in SH4, but I have had it in other games and it was codec related. If you are using the k-lite codec pack or any others, do note there are some hacked codecs in those packs. You will also need to do routine computer maintenance.

Thanks for the tip, although that wasnt the solution, it certainly led me on the right track.
I searched the UBI Silent Hunter forums and found the solution. You just have to rename or delete the Ubi and Intro movie. Thats it.
DONT ask me why - the movies are playing alright, but for some reason this messes up the loading process. I guess if i did take care of the codec thing, it wouldve worked also. So you probably were indeed right in the end. :)
Now to the next problem - Its 1.3 without u-boat. Guess now i have to use your initial post to solve this. :D
/edit:
Just a quick veryfying and it works. I cant believe it, but now i can actually play this game and the addon. :) :) :)

I seem to be having a very similar issue. I think it is somethign that very urgently needs to be adressed, as I have now used 10+ gig bandwidth, still downloading, and 16hours later am still not playing the game

I have now deleted both SH4, and SH4-uboat missions.
I have reinstalled SH4-uboat missions.
When I launched the game, it worked, about 2 minutes into the game, it crashes.
I have turned down all my graphics settings (which should not be a problem anyways)
Updated ALL computer drivers.
Installed a complete Vista x64 codec pack
It still crashes.
Deleted the movies/videos
Now SH4 has auto updated and now uboat missions crashes even before it launches

Sigh, I know how you feel, mine autoupdated and ALL my save games are useless, then uboat couldnt even be started.
I managed to get it running again by backing up the U-boat expansion. Then removed both SH4 and U-boat from local drive. Reinstalled U-boat from backup, then after 3 yes 3! verification it finally ran, but still crashed 1/2 hr in gameplay.
Seriously, I have spent more time getting this game to run than playing it.
