How to remove the rain and snow in sawmill:

does not work in sv_pure 2 :o

All major files have been updated and packed.

Direct X 9 pack with normal colored Flamethrowers
http://www.mediafire.com/?1niihnmtrd1

Direct X 9 pack with team colored Flamethrowers
http://www.mediafire.com/?jyynnmzzm32

Direct X 8 pack with normal colored Flamethrowers
http://www.mediafire.com/?vyt2mgamnyl

Direct X 8 pack with team colored Flamethrowers
http://www.mediafire.com/?kwogmydjt1w

Direct X 9 crit boost file by itself
http://www.mediafire.com/?0mywyvo4yzh

Direct X 8 crit boost file by itself
http://www.mediafire.com/?1q1mibtkvjj

The old item_fx file will cause crashing whenever a wrangler comes into use, so I disabled all old file downloads.

1. Completely removed snow/rain DX9 (http://www.mediafire.com/?mnmztynbzzd), Reduced rain/snow DX9 (http://www.mediafire.com/?yh3yoz44rlz), Completely removed rain/snow DX8 (http://www.mediafire.com/?2ztnjydqj3l), Reduced rain/snow DX8 (http://www.mediafire.com/?ymytwznjzng)
2. Open steam -> steamapps -> name -> team fortress 2 -> tf
3. Open the particles folder (or create it if it isn't there)
4. Paste the file downloaded in step 1

Done! For me, on DX9, it removed the snow and rain on Viaduct and Sawmill. I tested it with the following Demos:

ctf_sawmill Demo (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?y1jddeyy1yy)
koth_viaduct Demo (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?43jydg1mjzg)

Results when checking the framerate with FRAPS:

ctf_sawmill (before):
Frames: 9263 - Time: 66285ms - Avg: 139.745 - Min: 89 - Max: 207
ctf_sawmill (after):
Frames: 10039 - Time: 66497ms - Avg: 150.969 - Min: 97 - Max: 212

koth_viaduct (before):
Frames: 7831 - Time: 52099ms - Avg: 150.309 - Min: 104 - Max: 267
koth_viaduct (after:
Frames: 8219 - Time: 50600ms - Avg: 162.430 - Min: 98 - Max: 213

Although it seems a friend of mine still retains the rain + snow, but it does increase his framerate.

Really nice move, can you do it with other particles as well?Or at least decrease the particles. (flames, spy disguise, sticky bomb, omfg long rocket trail)

Flamethrower DX9 (teamcolored): http://www.mediafire.com/?tlkontwngjd
Flamethrower DX9 (regular color): http://www.mediafire.com/?1jzyomnjn3z
Flamethrower DX8 (teamcolored): http://www.mediafire.com/?jczaud2matw
Flamethrower DX8 (regular color): http://www.mediafire.com/?fqfymqmx21z

DX9 Rocket Trails: http://www.mediafire.com/?kmzwhynjdjj
DX8 Rocket Trails: http://www.mediafire.com/?oanzqtinmnn

Rocket trails and flamethrowers have reduced particle count/mass and have higher alpha (slightly more transparent)

Bump. Also: the halo update seemed to have decreased fps with 10 somehow. Is there a way to make them invisible?

(would give rep, but have none left atm)

But I have to ask, could you get rid of the glow and trail around sticky bombs and pipe bombs? Not the crits, just the little trail when they fly through the air.

EDIT: This needs to be stickied. NAO!

Can you remove the critboost effect, please?

Also +rep if this helps. I lag a lot on Viaduct, which is one of my favorite Spy maps.

DX9 only: http://www.mediafire.com/?jigqyy023wz
Only one downside though: It's the same file as the Halos so those are completely removed as well.

Bump, and a request: can we get some optimization for Medibeams? I'm feeling a drop of like 10-20 FPS any time Medic's on screen.

DX9: http://www.mediafire.com/?qzmmmgiywwv
DX8: http://www.mediafire.com/?umgrhh5ntyf

Hm, is there a way to slightly reduce the amount of particles from an explosion? I would love something like that, but it doesn't sound possible to me.

Reduced explosion sizes, no more smoke.
DX9: http://www.mediafire.com/?4wwwdkmtmid
DX8: http://www.mediafire.com/?2njwmtddqmr

Repped the OP, I love some community members.

If it's possible could you make some of the particles like muzzle flash disappear or could someone tell me a command for it?

I have created a thread (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=939507) requesting Valve to add an option to disable the rain and snow since they really lag the map, now I'm really proud of the community.

Thank you so much Buff. :3

Somewhere along the way in the last couple updates/GPU driver update, I seem to have gained a few FPS back. I'm not hitting the 30+ FPS mark any more, it's 43+ FPS now. Playing has been much nicer the last couple days. (I really noticed it yesterday in the way the game felt.)

Anyone else notice a slight boost in the last few days?

I'll be interested to see if this helps even more.

P.S.

You have 2 Viaduct (afters) instead of 1 and a (before).

If I remember right, the cvars to remove snow and rain are both marked as cheats.

Since you can't use cheats, you just replace the particle effects. Interesting.

How do I create a map? Also, how does creating a map affect all other maps? Don't maps go in \tf\maps?

You've either interchanged the before and after values, or you're seeing a performance decrease after making the change. That or I'm not reading this right.

Well, looks like I wasn't reading it right - your avg. framerate increases. Strange that the min framerate was higher before the change, though.

Valve has optimized the old particles (the ones that came with TF2, when it was released.)
They yet haven't optimized the particles, that have come with the updates.

Custom effects are nice, some were known for a long time (like custom rockettrails, custom explosions etc). They all gave a really nice fps boost. But you can also mess up bis time by making some particels so large that you can see overhealed people through walls etc.

Valve should just implement cvars to turn particle effects like snow, rain, rockettrails etc off. And cvars to lower the quality of explosions. Expect a massive fps boost from that.

No problems if you opened them and saved as "all files", it should still be a .pcf (or whatever one you downloaded). Just move it to the folder needed. If it's no longer a .pcf/whatever it is, just redownload the file needed and put it in the appropriate foldier. :)

i just want to make sure (this has probably been answered previously, but i still need some claricifaction if it isn't too much to ask...i'm not that great with computers...) but i installed these little modifications (btw thank you they ARE incredibly helpful). However...i know you said these mods can't be used on sv_pure 2 servers. Is this why when i tried joining a server it said something about "enforcing water_dx80.pcf" particles or something or other? I was actually a little sad if this is the case because that would mean that i would have to keep swapping out the files every time i wanted to join certain servers. Is there any way around this? (it's actually quite confusing because i know for a fact that the server i joined was sv_pure 0, all my skins and such work...)

i just want to make sure (this has probably been answered previously, but i still need some claricifaction if it isn't too much to ask...i'm not that great with computers...) but i installed these little modifications (btw thank you they ARE incredibly helpful).

If it enforces sv_consistency it won't work either, iirc. And yes, if you have both sv_pure 1 and sv_pure 2 servers on your friends list you'll have to keep switching out until Valve allows these in sv_pure 2 or makes them ingame options.

ahah. thanks a lot there for the answer (and the fast response!). Tis a wonderful thing you've found, and a great shame that valve doesn't help this along by fixing that sv_consistency thing...

Damnit, man, put the critboost disabling into DX8.

Yes absolutely front page! The invisible halo and clearer flamethrower fixes don't work for me :'(. And I wasn't able to join my favorite server because it was checking consistency for the no rain and snow fix :'(

We're not sure why the halo edit wouldn't work, it should unless you put it in the wrong spot, or the server is sv_pure 2/sv_consistency is being enforced.

I haven't had time to fully test yet, but I've found that loading Viaduct for just running around leaves it at a rather respectable pace. I don't care for the pyro flames, they seem a tad TOO clear. Rocket trails are nice, and the lack of weather should hopefully make KoTH run better (If I ever try it online again after the 10FPS lagfest I had when it did come out). I don't have a halo, so I haven't seen if that improves FPS on that front, but hopefully it will; I've also noticed that, similar to disguise smoke, the halo effect will sometimes sit in mid-air "running" for a minute after the owner dies. This should fix that, I'm guessing.

If you're mean sv_consistency then yes, that's a separate cvar and can always be used no matter how sv_pure is configured. Or did sv_pure replace it? Ugh, I'm not sure.

Anyway, sv_pure 1 use a whitelist so you have to configure it yourself, so whatever you mean the answer is probably yes.

No problem, and I do believe the bullet tracers are the most optimized thing Valve has ever done. :)

Download the particle file; http://www.mediafire.com/?wwjm1zydwwu

Then add the command cl_new_impact_effects 1 to your autoexec.cfg file for it to take effect. (you can do the command ingame through the console but I'm not sure if it'll stick)

Teleporter effects are in three separate files, one for the trail that sticks to your model after you teleport, one for the entrance/exit pads, and one for the teleport flash.

All three are blacklisted, the last two for no real reason.

BUT ISNT THERE A COMMAND FOR DISABLING WEATHER EFFECTS?

This thread was made before that option was added. I like to think it was me and Kaorin who got that option to be added, since I also put up a petition for it and emailed Robin with a linkg to both the petition and this thread.

Some of the DX8 files can't be downloaded.

Which files?

might as well bump this thread for the recent update

a small request: any chance we can reduce the particles from the ghost? the smoke and the w/e seems to be screwing my fps whenever the spectre spawns and such.

would be greatly appreciated!

because it's just WEATHER effects that they've removed. this thread has other particle edits that are also dreadfully useful

Here's your answer:

No, what I meant was... the particles folder will be removed after every update. Prior to the recent update, I've disabled crits animation. But when I booted up TF2, it reappeared.

Though I don't think the guy who did this has them up anymore.

Maybe remove the trail too. They're the only thing left for us to optimize.

When I download these, they don't seem to be working. I save them to my tf/particles file but in game the explosions/muzzle flash ect. is still there

What am I doing wrong?

I don't think I have to unzip anything, and I'm saving all the files in my particles folder. What do I need to do to get them to work?

Thanks in advance :3

What servers do you play on? sv_pure 2? sv_pure 1? If sv_pure 2, they don't work at all. If sv_pure 1, contact the admins and ask them to whitelist these files.

I wish to bump this wonderful thread which has made my game playable in dx9 again (from like 10-15fps to 40fps) (I have a 2.0ghz dual core cpu (bad) and a nvidea 9600m gs (laptop) (decent)).

In the past I had to play in dx8 to get a less or more playable framerate, but now I can enjoy a pretty game again :D

I asked about this. If you remove the critical particles in DX8 you'll never see any indication of crits on the opponents/yourself.

Which is bad, for obvious reasons.

thanks for everything you guys have done.

would it be possible to create an alternate crits animations that doesn't destroy your fps as much. this would help many people.

If you could help, i have a large list of partials that bsod me instantly, most of the ones already posted prevented a lot of crashes.

Currently the following will crash me/may crash me - Dispenser "glow", teleporters ( not even in use, i crash the second both sides are fully built ), sentry ( a little, it was fine at first but it still managed to crash me ), fire ( not sure why but only happened after i started to edit particles ) and pretty much everything demoman does ( idle stickes, regular nades, and even the eyelander crash me )

If you haven't guessed yet i'm running on a system thats not made for games lol.

Just use -dxlevel 81 for the launch options, it takes away phong.
Be sure to remove it after you've launched it once so your graphics option stop restting.
Or you you still use DirectX 9, but you have to use mat_bumpmap 1. Makes it so there is white shine, but it isn't everywhere anymore.

It works for me, note; that it only removes the excess glow and not the lightning.

Sc_softglow causes the framerate drop, not the lightning.

Edit; in Dx9 you have the weapon overlay to know when there's a critboost, in Dx8 if you remove the lightning... you have no indicator what-so-ever, so I left it in.

Edit #2; going to remove the lightning for Dx9 only, shortly.
