I am planning on getting a netbook to lug to school every day so I can use Microsoft office in my independent study/classes. I have seen that there are many different CPUs that come with these little computers. The most prominent one I see is the Atom CPU with HT and 1.6GHz, but I have also seen a Celeron that runs at 900MHz and a core solo that runs at 1.6GHz.

I need to balance price with performance and battery life as I really do not need a high end netbook(sort of an oxymoron) as I am just using this to type up papers and make powerpoints but I want it to be able to run these without any problems.(aka > 2:30 of battery life)

Atoms are fine for running Office apps, the Core Solo is probably more powerful but worse for battery life. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/low_end_cpus.html Most netbooks should do at least 4-5 hours so don't worry about it.

Netbook - get an N270/280 (they are in just about every one)

higher end - get a CULV CPU like the SU3500 (single core) or the SU7300 (dual core).
