Hey everyone, been a while since I posted here. Working with a friend to build him a computer, and I've got a couple potentials for him. Its been a little while since I researched parts, so I am a little behind on the latest and greatest.
Here is the build he is favoring:
Case - Cooler Master Elite - $40 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119189)
Power Supply - 650W Corsair - $90 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005)
Hard Drive - Samsung SATA 3.0GB/s 1TB Drive - $75 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185)
DVD Burner - Sony SATA 24X DVD Burner - $35 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118032)
RAM - OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) - $85 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227324)
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-P55 i5 Motherboard - $140 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128401)
CPU - Intel Core i5 750 - $200 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115215)
GPU - EVGA GTX260 Core 216 - $160 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130434)
Total after rebates is $825. We are trying to stick around an $800 budget.
Couple questions though:
1) My reading seems to indicate that the new Intel platforms use or can utilize something like tri-channel? He is potentially looking at increasing his budget to $1000, if this becomes the case, would it be best to go for 3x2GB (6GB) of RAM?
2)I find it interesting Intel went with 2 platforms for the next generation, where the i5 and i7 each have different sockets. What are predictions on the i5 platform being a viable upgrade path? Or would it be better to splurge on the i7 for more security down the road?
3) LGA775? Is this end of life? He asked me about the C2Q9550 because the motherboards were cheaper (as is the RAM), but in my opinion the C2Q9550 represents the high end of technology being phased out. I would assume he is going to be keeping this computer for a long time and not constantly upgrading... if this was the case how does the 9550 stack against the i5 and i7?
I then also put together an AMD build for him, use the same case, memory, hard drive, DVD burner, and PSU from first build:
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-MA770T - $70 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128392)
CPU - AMD PhenomII X4 810 - $145 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103650)
GPU - EVGA GTZ275 Super Clocked - $240 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130478)
Many thanks SPUF crew!
