You need to give it a drive letter, in the partition manager right click the drive and in the menu choose "change drive letters and paths"

It doesn't show up in explorer unless it has a letter :)

You might want to try and running some hard drive diagnostics on it, if the diagnostics can at least recognize it, to determine if there might be a problem with the drive.

it works on windows xp/vista is nothing wrong im just going to go back to windows vista i just hook my other 250gb in to back up for now

what do u mean maybe if i can install a OS on the drive and some how read the files from win 7 and tranfer them to this drive

i tried installing 7 on the drive just to tranfer files but i cant install 7 on usb drives/firewire

Was just saying it's possible that you'd need to reboot for the OS to see a newly partitioned/formatted drive.
