So, I've been living with this problem for quite a while, and I also have tested, and made clear that the problem is in steam client, and not in computer specific hardware/software:
The steam at moment has MASSIVE problem of giving CPU HUGE load when friend list is opened, and you are part about, over 100 groups, this is only the friend list - if opened, it causes massive CPU load, and when closed, goes away, anything else on steam from chats to client itself works. The same is exactly same in in-game community.
The problem is so big, that on amd atholon x64 dual core, the friend list instantly eats one whole core to itself. If you want to do anything else, you need to make sure the friend list is not open; nothing more CPU intensive can be used in parallel. I am not kidding that at moment my computer's hardest software for CPU is steam friends list.
So, yeah, as User I could self fix this: Abandon about 100 groups, when I would be still part little over 70 groups, but still be in pains possibly. And this would break community binds I have.
I highly think, and believe that this is fixable. Even though people who have this wide amount of joined groups (and also friends) is a minority, it still is a pain to live with. Since friend list is FORCED to open every first Shift+tab after opening game, it takes from 40 seconds to one minute for the overlay open, before what you need to just keep playing game in choppy state while CPU is loaded with massive leak the friend list generates, afterwards you proceed to shut the friends list and shift tab works as smoothly as it should again.
When opening taskmanager in windows, without friends list one, normal browser stuff on, my CPU load is 30-40%, steam is using 0-2% - after I proceed in opening friends list, taskmanager tells cpu load in 70-98% and steam.exe starts using 45-50% of cpu
I have also log on my account with other computers, where symptoms are exact same.
So, I am humbly asking, a possible fix to this problem. It would be appreciated.
