This is the only upgrade option (via Vista)?
Or preorder W7 straight out:

Well gosh.. What programs are giving you problems? YOU are probably not doing something right.
You are ripping on one of the most advanced, secure, efficient and reliable operating systems of all time.
I, for one, was not a fan of Vista when it came out. Not one bit. However, when I decided to purchase Vista (Ultimate x64) I got a pretty good deal at $79. I gave it an honest go and wow. It's great. The ONLY gripe that I have is that my 16-bit games don't work with it. I'm not bummed though, as it's not Microsoft's fault and dual-booting is easy as pie.
You are not going to get ANY sympathy here.

I've been running Vista Premium 64 bit for almost a year now. Overall it has been very stable and has not given me many problems at all. If you're having as many issues as you say you are having, then perhaps the problem is something to do with the software or drivers you've got installed?
Also, keep in mind that driver support for XP 64 bit is worst than it is for Vista.

you can not upgrade XP nor any 32-bit OS to 64-bit Windows 7
...and would have to do a clean "Custom Install"

Very well said. Vista got a very bad rap when it first came out. And even though microsoft has improved on some of the early problems, vista has not been able to recover from it's weak launch.
It really is a good OS. Windows 7 improves on it even more.

If you have Vista just upgrade to Windows 7 temporarily now. I heard that there is a search engine that helps you find these kinds of things.

What problems? Do you think you should figure out their causes before jumping into a new boat with your same luggage?

One thing to think about here is what some of the guys have already said, but there'sd a reason. Switching to Win7 is not gonna fix your issues becasue it's the very same OS. The exact same OS. It's just Vista with a few things added and some of the nag screens removed. It is probably something you are doing or some hardware that is not comaptible, but it's not the OS. If you load Win7 there's about a 99.9% probability that your gonna have the exact same issues, becasue you have the exact same OS. Win7 is identical to Vista except for some of the nag sceeens removed, some tweaks added to improve the way it runs, a little added driver support here and there, Native BlueRay support. It is the exact same Shell, exact same Kernel as Vista.
In fact, you might end up adding some new bugs you didn;t have before, because it is new, and there haven't been any service packs released yet. It WILL have issues of it's own. Every OS that has ever been released has, and this one will be no different. Vista on the other hand has been refined, the driver issues have been fixed, and they have released 2 service packs now.
You can upgrade to Win7 and there is nothing wrong with that if you want to, but I can just about gurantee it won't fix your issue. How about posting some details on the issues your having and let's get those fixed? How's that offer? :)

W7 IS Vista, if you dont like one you wont like the other.
XP is old, outdated, and has no place on anything more powerful than a netbook. Certainly not on a gaming PC.

and seven is coming out VERY soon anyways so it would be a waste to buy a copy of XP only to upgrade to Seven soon after. My only issue with both seven and vista is that they didn't keep the windows longhorn look.

thats true, ive only had my vista gaming rig since this past april and i LOVE it.. my previous comp was XP and i loved it, so much so that i wasnt planning on getting vista on my new rig, 1: because i knew XP in and out, and 2 because of all the things i heard about it but i said what the hell n got Vista HP 64bit and im very happy with it, havent had any problems at all with Vista, not even compat issues. took me a lil bit to get used to how vista's RAM cache works compared to how RAM is on XP but thats pretty much it.
and yeah Win 7 improves on Vista as 7 is based on much of Vista's code so it should definately be better. i however dont plan on getting Win 7 though, im fully happy with Vista, though years down the line or some such when theres plenty of win 7 compat drivers i may switch but until then probably not..
