I'm currently trying to login to a P-660H-D1, ZyXEL router. I go to 192.168.1.1 and the password bar already has a password in it, so I click login and it does login. But all the settings are hidden/not there. It only tells me things like -

System Uptime:
Current Date/Time:
System Mode:
CPU Usage:

etc.

In the online manual it says to login with 1234 but this still gives me the same menu.

Any ideas guys? A hardreboot/reset isn't an option as I need to get the login details for the internet connection from the router before I can do this, as no one knows them.

Thanks

EDIT: Could it be that the router had been set up to only show connection details and set up options to a certain MAC address?

It seems like maybe your browser has a wrong password saved for you router and automatically tries to log into the wrong one. And the router maybe gives you some nearly blank page.

So first of all I'd try to log into the router with a different browser. If that doesn't work, then you should be able to do a hard reset by pushing a very tiny button on the router. You'll need a pin to do this. Then try logging in again.

And I think it's very unlikely that a router would be locked to a certain MAC address, though not impossible, IMO.

It's not the browser, it logs in fine. It just isn't giving me full access, only like a general user access.

I can't do a hard reset as mentioned in my OP.

Why is it not an option? Can you explain? Because this router seems to have the hard-reset capability. And if there are settings on it that are non-default (just one guess as to why you wouldn't wanna hard-reset) and you don't wanna lose them, then how do you know that the password is default?

Routers/modems die all the time. The ISP will assist you with any login information required for your Internet connection. Was the router/modem provided by the ISP? If so, maybe they are running a customized firmware that only allows limited access to the menu. Have you ever tried logging into the admin console of it before? If not, how do you know the menus were ever there?

Basically, I'm in a rented student house. The person who set up the router moved out around 3 years before I moved in and the person who pays the internet/phone bills is away sailing for a month and so it wouldn't be fair of me to be messing him around getting him to phone the ISP to get login information.

The router is stock as far as I'm aware as no one in the house past or present is a geek.

Zyxel have two passwords - user and admin. By default you are given the user password (is already filled in), that allows you to view the settings, i.e. read only administration. You must enter admin password to be able to change things.
Default user password is user, default admin password is (as you know) 1234.
If it doesn't work, your options are:
-guess the admin password (admin, pass, password, pass1234, zyxel etc)
-reset it to factory defaults
-leave things the way they are

About ringing the ISP, you don't need the bill payer, many ISPs use the same one for all users. If not, they can find your account by either the phone number or address (bes is if you find the last bill though). So give that a shot.

No need to guess the PW, look up that router's model and download the PDF (http://us.zyxel.com/Support/Download-Library.aspx) manual if you don't have the hard copy, which will tell you how to access it, and all the user/pw info for that router. If the default passwords do not work for some reason, do the RESET on your router, then access it through a wired connection and set it up again for your internet. By resetting it any/all user names/passwords will go back to defaults, along with all the settings.

Cheers. I think it's time for some password guessing then.

EDIT: You don't need to type 'user' to login, it comes to the same page no matter what you type. Is this normal?

it's probably defaulting to user access if you get the password wrong. But take care, the admin page is very similar to user options
