I have just moved from Vista x64 to Windows 7 x64 , installed steam & CS:S and noticed one thing... Game runs ok, everything is ok till I exit game.. Then I get popular HL2.exe crash . It is quite annoying - I did't have this error on Vista x64 . Do you have the same issue on Win 7 ??

Hl2.exe crashing on exit has been a known "bug" for ages.

But the most strange thing is that this started to happen on Windows 7 x64 . With Vista Home Premium x64, for 3 years I had not met such error . Maybe I will try to completely uninstall steam apps , and download again everything...

I actually experience this crash with Vista 32bit. Every time I quit CS:S it crashes.

Does it happen all the time? I ask because I've had this problem in Windows Vista and Windows 7 many times, and it's not just restricted to HL2 games. It happens with L4D2, Dragon Age, even Firefox sometimes. Sometimes I trace it back to the Xfire Overlay DLL (toucan) but other times it's just some random NT DLL. If it fixes itself, it may be because of a compatibility problem. After 2 crashes, Windows 7 will automatically apply a shim to try to correct the error.

I have played many games since I installed Windows 7 and CSS is the only one that crashes on exit. Its not a big deal since Im already exiting the game, but it doesnt ever happen with Orange Box engine games like DODS and TF2

I've had the problem on Vista 32 , 64 and 7. All fresh installs of everything.
In CSS, DOD:S and TF2.

I think we've established that its something to do with Source Engine.

i always figured the operating system just failed at detecting the game's exit from a crash. would be nice if it was fixed though.

This could make sense because everything works fine. It's just on exit, the program looks to have closed and then the error pops up.

i have the same exact error, but it only happens to me with css, not tf2, tf2 closes okay.....

It does not annoy me , but what i am concerned for, is that this error, in any way, could trigger a false positive VAC Ban, since as far as i know, VAC detects if steam ddls are modified or changed, and i do not know, that this error, in any way could do this......

Moreover, the repetitive crashes, may lead to file corruption, which is something totally benign in comparison to a vac ban.....

so please tell me someone that knows, can this in any way or sort trigger a false positive vac ban, if so, ill change right away, my ultimate 7 x64 back to my xp x86

I got the same error when exit L4D and CSS (looks like all source games). Mine is Vista 64 home premium.
But I installed Fackfactory cinematic mod 10.2.

been having the same thing on win 7 64bit. Went away for a while then noticed it came back. Using radeon card. wondering if gfx drivers play a role.

Get your facts right Mr Troll. This also used to happen on XP. Not just to myself but a lot of friends too. So it seems it is back again and everyone is saying it happens more on Vista/Win7 because Doh! Most people have updated to a newer operating system. Unlike some still stuck in the past... :p
