Valve believes the bare chest of a female is "offensive" to look at.

Valve's message:

You have been banned from interacting with your profile and groups due to an offensive content violation.

This ban will be lifted on November 12, 2009 at 10:23 AM.

Chances are pretty good you know what you did.
So do we.
It was stupid.
People notice.

The content was a girl without her shirt. The game (TF2) is already rated Mature. Why cater to kids?

You didn't think someone would report that? TF2 may be rated mature but the Steam Community site isn't, as evidenced by the fact that all sorts of games are sold and played there and they just opened up a family section on the store...

I realized that. It's too bad they don't give you any information on WHY they're temporarily banning you without warning. A simple warning and I'd have taken the photo down. Ridiculous.

It should really be common sense. Would you go anywhere where there are children and hand out pictures containing boobs?

I'm in a different mindset than you. Common sense to me is that boobs are just a part of life, I wouldn't go hiding them from children.

Like I said in the other thread: Welcome to society.
Everyone doesn't see things the same way you do.
Sure, it would be great if sex and eroticism were open topics in today's society, but they aren't.

Hm, they are open topics in modern society. Don't you watch television?

I really don't understand you people. Why not just follow the rules? "Oh, they have this rule but I'm totally anti-fascist so I post whatever I want and start complaining once the rules are enforced". This has absolutely nothing to do with sexuality beeing part of life but simply with the fact that valve decided to put some rules into place. You decided that, for you, these rules don't apply, so why complain?

Don't get me wrong, boobs are great, But you should learn that your view of the world is not necesarily the same as that of other people. Noone forces you to use steam or the community. If you want to do that, obey the rules or don't complain.

Why did you even post this message. I did not know breasts were not allowed until I was banned without warning. I did not deliberately break the rules. I don't remember reading "NO NUDITY" before uploading a photo. I was under the impression that avatars were uncensored. According to a moderator in another thread, nudity isn't even specifically against the rules- "offensive content" is, and they decide on a case-by-case basis which pictures are considered offensive.

Complaining is something we can do. We're allowed to express our opinions here, as opposed to say, a forum of which each topic is moderated- a forum of which if were a country, would not allow Freedom of Speech. Steam forums are democratic in that we're given a reasonable amount of Freedom of Speech. Let's leave it at that, because the argument of whether people should complain will find no resolution. I realize you thought I broke the rules deliberately and that perhaps I came here to start a flamewar, but I did not.

The argument that TF2 is rated M for Mature is stupid. First, showing Boobs in your profile isn't that mature. Second, your Community profile is public. Everyone can see it. To protect minor viewers Valve set rules. You broke the rules and got punished slightly. So, why are you complaining like a little child?

Take it like a grown up and accept it.

Boobs are a part of life? What.....what is that? Last time...I checked....women typically don't...walk around....topless.....there are specific places for that...nude bars, such and such...
For example...when you go into a public book store that sells magazines, ever notice the PlayBoy's are covered up? How about when you go to a porn site and it has "You Must Be At Least 18 Years Old To Enter, Click 'OK' To Accept". Why do you suppose that is? Maybe...just maybe because it's considered inappropriate, or offensive, content? Hmm? Going by your "they're just a part of life" theory, they should be entirely uncovered for the whole world to see...heck, maybe even some penises in there too for the ladies.
C'mon guys...really? You talk about common sense...it seems like this post is lacking it very much. 0.o

TF2 is rated M for violence, among other things. Not Nudity. I don't expect it when I play. It's the same reason some server-owners ban your ♥♥♥ when you put up nude sprays.

If they are animated and atleast covering the nipple area, I do not see the big deal, but I don't think this was the case. Some rules are enforced very strict.

DURR WUTS Z RULEZ?

Just because a game is rated mature, doesn't mean your allowed to post porn on it.. mature is rated for 17+, and in most states and or counties, it is illegal for anyone to view under the age of 18, or in some states or countries, 21. so as far as i see it, depending on where you live, even if you are old enough, putting up porn, is illegal.

It's MA15+ here, you can't post porn where minors can view it. Plus people can be watching the game - my 8-year-old cousin loves watching me play it, my mum would kill me if she saw that anywhere on my monitor, etc.

Well we're talking about avatars, which are on the Steam community website. You can see them in-game but only if signed into friends.

About nudity while playing, most games warn you that online interactions are not rated by the ESRB. If you've been gaming for a while you know that a lot of user-created maps utilize actual porn.

I remember this map on the UPS clan server for FEAR- your mom would have a heart attack.. There was a porn theater in the map with real porn playing on this big screen.. I think it was Duke Nukem themed. It was graphic. XD Anyone remember this?

OMG! BOOBS! SHUT DOWN... EVERYTHING!

Right now the standard procedure against pornographic or offensive material is that, they will be removed by an admin and the person will be banned from editing his/her community profile for some time. I don't have a problem with this part (those type of stuff doesn't bother/offend me at all) but i can see why you don't want people using/having them on their profiles. My problem is that there is no rule saying that they aren't allowed to use them. UNWRITTEN RULES ARE BEING ENFORCED AT THE MOMENT. Every time a person who is banned for these type of stuff creates a thread, mods and devs answer with something like "it's common sense" or "what makes it ok to use pornographic content?". Common sense doesn't work on internet. One might think, "well, i'm over the legal age for porn in my country and most of the games on steam are M rated, etc". In fact, a friend of mine got his privileges revoked a while ago because of having a nice pair of female breasts as his avatar and when i was chatting with him, he said that he didn't know he can't have pornographic stuff on his profile and according to him he sees them on other people's profiles all the time. Did he really know that he can't use them? NO, because most people don't visit the forums and there aren't any rules indicating otherwise. Was he correct about seeing other people using them? YES, truth is that they won't be dealt with till someone actually reports them.

If you want people to follow certain rules, then you should put them out there. It doesn't have to be something fancy, or have a separate page called "RULES", etc. Something as short and simple as "Nothing offensive or pornographic please" in red on top of the "edit my profile" page will get the job done. Trust me, people won't risk their steam accounts for stupid stuff. Also if somebody uses that type of material, now they're doing it knowingly and you guys can carry out more severe punishments. It will also reduces the number of reports significantly so you don't have to deal with 25000 reports per week. (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10290129&postcount=10)

There are unwritten rules in the world. Use common sense. Adapt to your environment.

MikeBlaszczak
10-18-2009, 09:04 PM
People aren't risking their Steam accounts; they're risking their ability to edit or display their Steam Community profile. Even while banned from Steam Community, they can still play games. Steam Community bans are (in most cases) temporary, unlike VAC bans.

There's really no point in making a list of rules. It would always be incomplete or out of date. It should be obvious that "offensive or pornographic" material isn't allowed, since Steam Community profiles are viewable without a password, they have to be squeaky clean.

Showing rules won't cut down on the number of reports made, at least not in a meaningful way.

If you want a place on the web where you can post whatever you'd like, feel free to register you own domain. You can get a hosting package for only a few bucks a month.

Also remember that this is not a democracy. VALVe can handle things any way they want to, and they don;t even need a reason. Just giving a reason is more than they have to do.

This thing about posting boobs in public profiles is pretty easy to grasp. I mean what's next? Crotch shots too? Heck yeah, let's get some of that low angle stuff in there too. Why not?

Not! Steam Profiles are not a porn site. This is like the most pointless thread I've ever seen, and I thought the one I saw yesterday was completely pointless, but this just blows that away.

If I had boobs, I'd be politically involved with gender equality rights. Like these chicks (http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/articles/2007/11/18/1195321589275.html). And this girl (http://girl-wonder.org/gwog/2008/01/theyre-just-breasts). I'd be a feminist if I were female
