is there some way to play music via Steam so i can shift+tab to change songs, instead of using Alt+Tab to mess with Windows Media player?

I would like to resurrect this thread and re-ask it. I just found this steam media player section of the forum so I'm curious what that even is.

There are some videos (mostly trailers) on the Steam store that you can download and then they'll be in your Media tab. Then you play them. It uses Steam Media Player.

But yes, in-game music wouldn't be a bad feature.

It might happen in Steam V4.
Who knows?

Good idea!
I'd use it even if it was very simple, I don't need all that fancy stuff and all the plugins in winamp..

1. Set hotkeys in winamp.
2. Use hotkeys in-game.

Works fine for me. Though you can't really select songs besides spamming previous and next. And in some games the hotkeys won't work. It works on all valve/source games though.

not good enough =) Yea it might work, sometimes, but it's not a part of steam. I figure it'd be easy to implement something that can just look in certain folders and play media files there. Especially considering it's built into two different interfaces for OS X and they've implemented webkit. It just seems like something that wouldn't be too hard to do.

Well, the Source Engine contains a built-in mp3 player (mp3 in console), but it's unstable. Using a media player like iTunes in the background is the best option.

I know that Xfire has a built Music player that i think just uses your windows media player playlist. from there its just shuffle. But using it with steam is really laggy and i'd like to see steam steal the idea... dont worry steam, i wont tell

I'd sincerly hope if this gets implemented, they at least implement some form of API system for 3rd party developers...

Would love to then write my own input plugins..

I think I'm the only person who wouldn't be bothered by Steam distributing music as well.

I found that when I disabled Windows Media Player, the Steam Media Player no longer worked (playing, for example, Meet the Team vids directly from the Steam media library). In fact, my understanding as that it ran automatically through WMP. I couldn't find any way to change it, though, or I would have certainly switched it over to VLC if it really couldn't run as an independent player.

I'm interested in it too! Hope we can see this implemented.

To push this a little further (possibly outside the bounds of reason), I would LOVE to have my music sync to the Steam servers so when getting a new PC or when I'm at work on the Mac, I have my media library with me. Highly unlikely, high bandwidth cost, would absolutely LOVE it. I would pay monthly for this feature.

i wish Steam opened their UI to third party plug-ins, though I can see the obvious security and stability issues

You can use the steam browse as a music player if you download Winamp and addon named AjaxAMP. :)

Or you can just use the dozens of other services that already offer this feature. Grooveshark, Hype Machine, Last.fm and such.

Although there's so much integrated stuff in steam it couldn't hurt to add one more thing on top of the web browser, voice chatting, screenshots and (coming soon I assume?) video recording services, hey?

Those sort of services stream music afaik.

Streaming music is a no-go for people who wish to do MP gaming with a slow connection.

Still, I second the notion for a MP3 player.

(sorry for the bump)

no apologies needed. More people should post the need for this. If they're working on video then do it right after that. I don't know about this trading business. Seems like a waste. Do the music player!

There used to be an mp3 player in HL2, I have NO idea why it was removed though. I miss it dearly. ;_;

I think Steam should link up with Grooveshark on this idea.

I think any kind of integrated music player in steam would be really nice. our own audio library would simplest I imagine, but if they want to hook up with other streaming services that'll be nice too as the artists will get paid that way (well...with some at least =/ dumb google music doesn't pay the artist! how lame is that)

I listen to music on my laptop while I'm playing games on my desktop... or just have VLC or WMP or some other media player open in the background. Not hard. Most games don't really need custom music. I only need custom soundtracks for games like THPS4 or Halo or uhm... Team Fortress 2?

You could just launch VLC with the http interface.
As most of you are probably on Windows now, here's a guide for it. Adding the same command line options on OSX should work as well but I don't know how things are done over there :P

Make a copy of your VLC shortcut.
Call that copy something like VLC with Web Interface
Open up the properties of that shortcut and add "-I http" after the executable name in the program field. It should look something like:
"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\vlc.exe" -I http
Point your browser to http://127.0.0.1:8080
You should have a web interface of VLC accessible via your browser! This can be opened in the Steam overlay as well.
To kill the program when you're finished playing your precious music, you can open the task manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and end the vlc.exe process.

I'm not on Windows now, so no screenies.
