I bought a retail copy but I thought I'd share how I got GTA running. Updating drivers via the super clean update methods did not do the trick.

I had used RivaTuner ages ago to slightly overclock my 8800GTX and to raise the fan speed, but I've been running at stock settings for a long time. Once I made RivaTuner "reset all driver" settings and rebooted my system, THAT did it.

This fix was suggested in gtaforums, summarized by fflaguna.

Note: I'm been gaming on my dev system and I already had .Net 3.5 installed. I don't know if that would have made a difference.

Vista64 Ultimate
E8400
8800GTX
4GB RAM

EDIT: My problem was "no-textures".
