2 parts - first a note to players - second a note to HeadupGames
First - do not run the level editor as first it crashes and then it prevents you from running future wars at all - the 'solution' proposed by Headup in an earlier thread didn't work for me (which was to copy the entire future wars folder to Documents/username/futurewars AND to games/futurewars folders (for VISTA) Instead the way to fix it is to copy any map in the cust_maps folder and then rename it 'newMap' and the xml and rename it newMap.xml - then you have 2 identical maps in custom games but its better than not being able to run at all. Second part - can you let us know if there will be a fix for the level editor - it was one of the main reasons I bought the game and it doesn't work unless using the retail install version on a german platform of windows - I'm fairly sure you can't count on steam buyers being happy with this. If there is going to be a fix (I appreciate it could take some time) but is it possible to provide an estimated date? - Also there are quite a few areas where translation is poor/missing in the menus and the campaign dialogue - poor translation isnt too bad but the hot seat sub menus are in German which is a little confusing - Other than that its a tidy little simple strategy game that I'm otherwise very happy with - get the editor fixed and it'l be golden

Are already testing a patch internally for this. And by the way easy fix after the editor crash is to delete the corrupted mapfile created. But we are working on a cleaner solution.

Ok People, here is the real simple way to get your level editor to work/launch...
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++ 1. Go to your installation folder, inside the future wars folder you will see a folder called " export " right click this folder with your mouse, and select copy. 2. Now go to your " My Documents " folder and look for the corresponding folder called " future wars " look inside this folder to locate another folder called " editor " Now go into the " editor " folder and right click your mouse, and select " paste " from the drop down menu. wait for this operation to complete... will take a short while as it includes the copying of 300plus megabytes of data. Once completed go onto the next step. 3. Now, still looking inside the " My Documents/future wars/editor/ " folder you will notice a single file called " settings.xml " open the file settings.xml using windows notepad, or somthing similiar. ( note in most cases you will be able to right click the file and select edit.) It is most important that you DO NOT alter the file type or convert the file to another format when editing or saving it ! change the contents of the file so that they now point to your installation directory ( 1 line to alter ) here is an example of mine... <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <Settings> <Path> <ProjPath path="E:\Steam\steamapps\common\future wars\" /> <SelectedTileColor color="-65536" /> <UnselectedTileColor color="-4144960" /> <HighlightToolboxColor color="-4144960" /> <RubberbandColor color="-16777216" /> <ShowDebugNumbers flag="true" /> </Path> </Settings> now if you look at the line with my installation directory ( projPath ), you will notice it says E:\Steam\steamapps\common\future wars\ It originaly stated <ProjPath path="C:\Programme\Future Wars\" /> Once you have completed editing the proper path/location of your installed game. Save the file out, and you are good to go. The editor can then be luanched correctly from your steam shortcut, and your custom maps etc will be correctly saved in the right location to load and play. __________________________________________________ _________________________ I hope this is of help to some of you who are experiencing difficulties, please read through the whole set of instructions, make sure that you have the required computer skills to complete the whole task before starting, remeber if you mess it up, you may have to delete all files and re-download the whole game via steam. Happy Game-ing regards Alex |

Thanks Alex, and we are working on the patch to get all this done by an installer automatically :-) For the impatient, this is a great help.
