Unreal Development Kit - unavailable through Steam?

I noticed that in the Steam Tools section I have the Unreal Development Kit, even though I don't have Unreal 3. But when I click it, it keeps telling me:

Steam - Error
This game is currently unavailable.
Please try again at another time.
OK

Except that I get this message always, no matter which time I try, and it's also the only tool (or game) which gives me this error.

I know I can download it via website instead (http://www.udk.com/), but that's not the point - why doesn't the Steam download work?

I'm experiencing the same thing, I'd like to know if theres a solution or one that is on its' way. I'm pretty much on my to no longer downloading things I'm interested in unless its from a trusted program like steam or if its a game patch that I need, I really don't feel like downloading unreal off of the website. So if there is a solution let me and this guy know about it.

I think because it is on beta release right now, just wait until they release a stable version or download the latest beta release from their website.

Another year passed without a fix.

Hi,

Another year passed without a fix.

This "game" is "currently" unavailable.
UDK is not a game.
It is never available, not just currently.

Onto my point... If you navigate to:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\unreal development kit\
and open the only file there: readme.txt

You will find that it contains only one line:
Quote:
To really download and learn more about the UDK, go here: http://www.udk.com/
Furthermore, Steam reports that UDK takes up 256MB of space (Properties -> Local files -> Disk usage), but when I choose to create a backup to verify that, the result only takes up 1 kilobyte. (Which is that one text file I posted above.)

Fix this incorrectly reported file size.
And fix the game is unavailable bug as well.
I know, the magic word is please. Here goes: Please.

--3ICE

p.s.: I am currently downloading the December 2011 UDK Beta. (1.6 GB exe file) It will take (estimated) 10-15 minutes.

p.p.s.: Necro for great justice!

This is when having the disc version is better. You can grab it pretty cheap on amazon or ebay (both UT2004 and UT3). The UDK doesn't take much space, and is a very useful tool.

Hello? The UDK is free.

You must be very old to still use discs. This is the year 2012, not 1990.

3ICE is right, there is only a readme.txt file in the UDK directory in steam. and It just tells tyou to go to UDK.com to download the actual UDK. Thanks 3ICE!! Stll not sure why this UDK is even on steam.

Huh? I don't see the point of having UDK on steam BTW.

What's the benefit of running it through steam? You'll want to develop your apps without any intervention from other application (in this case steam) since UDK based apps SHOULD able to run without steam, if you're developing for windows/mac.

Why fix steam related issues on UDK (filesize and only txt download) if it doesn't do your system any harm? Just leave it there.

Anyway people are already developing full-blown games with UDK beta (The Ball, The Haunted, Qube, Red Orchestra 2 and Dungeon Defenders)... it is fine. Some people in the UDK forum said that "beta" has something to do with legal strategy epic done. They are releasing it for free, so if in any case UDK doesn't work well like they do they can say the product is in Beta state. But yet, I won't complain since every month there're tons of new updates for UDK added.

If you want steam version well, UT 3 have its own SDK. But what's the point when UDK is right there, free to download?

Answering exoriority paragraph by paragraph:

Neither do I. It is there though. And if something is on steam it should work. Or be removed.

No benefit of running it through steam. Edit: Actually there is one; It is a bit more convenient for some people.

What? This should be fixed on the steam side, not UDK.

That is not related to this thread.

I don't want a steam version, but if there is one I want it to work. And there is one. And it doesn't work.

download it from udk.com

install it to your pc

copy udk folder somewhere else, it's portable, you can work on it anywhere you want

steam isn't needed at all

you're welcome.

But if it is OBVIOUS, then what's there to fix? What's the problem?

And the benefit of running UDK through steam? I can't think of any. Overlay? You could've just create a non-steam shortcut from UDK.

Portability? UDK IS Portable.

Having it hanging there in the tools sections uninstalled won't do your system any harm. You don't need to install it or anything. The txt file obcviously instructed you to go to udk.com to download it. It is very clear. Are you confused with the instruction or anything?

Sometimes... people just puzzled me.

Then they should remove it from steam.
It doesn't work.
Why is it there?
Why do you make me repeat myself over and over? Read the posts above yours.

do you even use it?

do you install everything listed within the tool section and test em one by one? if so... man you need get out a little bit more.

nevertheless it doesn't do anything harm to your system. I don't see any fix needed.

It's probably Epic's decision too. They probably want people aware of the kit and hence the txt file and kept it on the tools section. That is kinda obvious isn't it?

But if you insisted for it to get removed, the forum isn't the best place to complain about it. Go pm the valve staff or file a support ticket.
