+25% Bonus when building Pyraminds WHY ?

Howdie

A few nights ago I was playing Civ V (Prince, Huge Map, England) and decided to build my first Wonder: The Pyramids.

A while into the construction I noticed my production was something like 11.25 and how I was gettin g a quarter of a production ???

After checking I found out that I was getting a "+25% Wonder Construction, the Pyramids".

What is this?????

Does the Prince level give a bonus to Wonders (I thought it was meant to be even)?

Is this a bug ?

Any other reason why I would get this bonus ?

Thanks for your help

Did the city you were building them in have direct access to marble?

There are three wonder production bonuses I remember right now:

- Egyptian civilization
- Tradition/Aristocracy social policy
- access to marble

Btw, bonuses for "production of buildings", like for example workshop (+15 % for buildings) don't count for wonders.
General production bonuses (factory, for example) of course do

Good luck trying to build the Pyramids with a factory. By the time you've got factories created someone has already built the Pyramids, guaranteed. Unless you're playing by yourself, against nobody. Lol.

You're right. But I was talking about wonder production bonuses, not Pyramids production bonuses

Many howdies and Thanks for everyones help, muchly appreciated

Just to clarify does Marble affect every Wonder or only some ?

Some of the previous posts seemed to indicate that all Wonders are affected.

I had previously found it puzzling why construction based bonus' seemed to have been reduced in Civ 5 over 4, by this I mean that in Civ 4 you had Stone and Marble which helped with various Wonders (and some Buildings), but had no unit based strategic value.

When I noticed that Stone had been removed from Civ 5 and the Marble seemed to be primarily a commerce based resource, I wondered why it was included at all. In other words why make a commerce based resource and call it Marble, which in Civ 4 had construction conotations, over say some other resource ?

Now it makes more sense to me; given a little artistic license in interpretation, of the efficacy of Marble usage in large scale construction projects of course

Whilst I agree that Marble may seem overpowered (as one of the previous posters mentioned) I do however welcome the inclusion its Wonder building benefits.

Its nice to have a little more complexity, and strategy, when it comes to the value of resources.

Having to consider the cultural value of Wine and Incense or the Production benefits of Fish/Whale/Perals, over say the raw economic value of Gold/Silver, or the Happiness inducing Ivory/Horses (I think it was happiness anyway ... whatever its catalyst function was for the Circus).

Anyway IMO extra resource benefits are a good thing, regardless of how they may contribute to a less homogenous playing field.

PS

As an aside, to the poster who mentioned Civ 5 being dumbed down.

When I first got my hands on the Collectors edition of Civ 5 I was extremely happy to be delving once again into the world of Civilization. After reading the Manual however I was extremly disappointed. I could not believe everything that had been removed.

After playing the game (and reading the strategy guide), I am gradually becoming a convert (and yes I know I will most likely be accused of post purchase rationization), but the truth is I am really enjoying this game. That is not to say that I do not wish that espionage, religion and health were not all back in (among other things), but I also am pleasently surprised by some of the game design aspects of this instantiation of the series.

In particular I am intrigued by the shift towards leader/civilization benefits that need to be actively exploited to be useful, rather than just passive benefits that assisted a player regardless on how they played.

Almost every leader benefit (and many units) have to be actively exploited in Civ 5 to be useful, ie (Furor Teutonics, Barbary Corsairs, River Warlord, Hellenic League, Sacrificial Captives etc) or leveraged for maximum affect (Sun Never Sets, Ancien Regime, Manifest Destiny etc).

In addition the complementary nature of many units/buildings/abilities was interesting and in many cases had a grounding in history (by grounding I mean plausability rather then 1-1 correlation).

I also liked how adding exra benefits to existing buildings serve to ensure that that particular empires build many of those type of buildings thus flavouring factions through consequence rather than direct benefit.

For example, the Buriel Tomb and Satraps Court ensure that the Persians and the Egyptions both end up having a solid financial base through consequence, rather than passive benefit;(outside of the maintenance benfit of the Buriel Tomb). Their passive benefits are both to do with happiness which is not of direct financial benefit.

Another example would be that by reducing the cost of the German Pikeman by 75, results in larger German Medieval armies, thus extending their Ancient/Classical hordes obtained through Furor Teutonics.

Alternatively providing Suleiman with pillaging Siphais leads to the Ottomans being able to economically choke their adversies (through both Blockade from their infinite navy or vandalism through the siphai). Anyone that doesn't get the message can be sent a bouquet of Janissaries.

I see these techniques as a way to flavour factions, and personally think its quite cunning and welcome.

Anyway thats just my take. Civ 5 has its problems (mechanics bugs in particular) but it also has laudable qualties too. So although I wish for more complexity and historical immersion, I also appreciate what has been achieved and provided.

Just my take, for what it is worth.

Apologies if the PS part of my post was off topic, especially since I started it, I hope this is a forgivable transgression.

Wonders are unique buildings only attainable by one faction during a game. They all give nothing but beneficial bonuses which is why they are so sought after. Pyramids is one of the earlier must haves.

And answering it in a questionable way! Pyramids only boost plot improvement build speed by 25% — but how often do you really need to make plot improvements? I often skip it and rush something else, like the Oracle.

For the whole game, usually. You don't? (I'm not sarcastic now.)

Well, no. When I get a worker to build a plot improvement I rarely change it. That's what I meant: an improvement gets built, and that's it. In the games I play, whether it takes four turns to build an improvement or whether it takes fewer is not really a big deal compared to getting a free social policy that brings me closer to a bigger city-state bonus (or production bonus, or culture bonus etc), or getting a free tech so that I can build a wonder that is important for my victory condition.

Of course Pyramids are nice, and I don't mind building them, but I prioritise other wonders first.

I build the Pyramids so I don't need as many workers. They can cost quite a bit in upkeep.

Yeah, to solve this I just disband a worker when I'm done with him. Towards the middle of the game they begin taking only a few turns to produce, or I can purchase them if my economy is happy enough.

OP - ADDENDUM

Thanks guys,

You have answered my question.

I did have marble in the city, and was not aware of its production bonus.

I gotta say, I do not believe that is noted in either the manual, strategy guide or Civolopedia. (Just went back and checked under Marble and Pyramids, no reference). Perhaps it is elsewhere ?

Can anyone tell me if there are any other material based construction bonus' in the game ? (ie does Marble affect any other Buildings or Wonders, or are there any other undocumented construction bonus' for Buildings/Wonders/Units and other materials).

I am rather pleased that Civ V has a bonus such as this implemented.

I was previously pleasently surprised when I came across a few extra benefits, outside of passive bonus to tiles, for different resources in the game, ie :

Wine and Incense and a Monastery
Circus and Horses/Ivory
Water Resources and a Harbour
Gold/Silver and the Mint

If anyone has any others to add I would appreciate it (especially if they are undocumented)

Thanks to all for the assistance.

Yeah, you can only notice that in tactical screen (hexagon one) or messages like, "your city now has access to marble!". It is totally unfair however. Other luxury goods don't give something like that (aside from incense, wine, gold and silver (+culture +gold) - feel free to add more if you know, that I missed)
