Couched lances in F&S?

I've bought myself a simple lance expecting to be able to do couched lance damage - but it doesn't seem to happen (with lance attacks on automatic or user (easy)). Do I need a certain level of polearm skill?

Not sure, I'm starting to think you need to have a ridiculously fast horse...
