sp_rlpudding01 [v2]

Hello,
this is the first map I ever did with Hammer.
Comments would be really appreciated.

EDIT: I updated the map to version 2. Hope it's now better and only solvable in the way I intended it. I changed a lot of textures and removed the cube, because it made no sense in the first place
pls comment

I'm currently working on chamber 2 and I hope I can link those two in the future.

I know you want to encourage alternate ways to solve it, but dont make the alternate method super easy...

Just played three or four different ways through the level. While providing different ways to complete it may be a personal goal of yours, I think you should try and make it feel like the player cheated his way for the alternate way.

As it stands, there is just too many options and no clear "right way to do it". Don't place a cube in a level if there is no need for it, and try and make sure the conveyor beam is actually necessary. You can currently beat the level in 6-7 seconds flat without ever using it.

Pace your gameplay. Present the problem to players in a clear way (you're almost there right now) and work on that challenge to make it precise and thoughtful. Then you can think of adding the small bits that are less obvious and will make players feel extra awesome for figuring them out.

This is a good shape and a nice shell for a good challenge. Keep at it.

thx for the awesome comments.

i might just make all the surfaces unportable and then put panels where i want the portals to go. and then add all the other stuff.
that is actually the way i make my next map and it gave a lot of insight.
now i really a lot of respect for the level designers of portal 1 who had to create challenging maps with all white surfaces.

I just imagine myself trying that first part on PS3, no wonder custom chambers are PC only.

Well since Furyo already discussed some of the problems I am not going to use spoiler text. Like he said the box is unnecessary, but it should be obvious to most players that it is since there is no button and no place where you would need a height boost.

I was wondering if there is any use for the slant panel that you activate with the button. I could not foresee any use for it, was wondering if it was just there to trick the player. If so, I think generally none of the Portal official levels ever try to trick you with unnecessary items.
