Malus

Could someone please tell me what malus is, since it's never explained by the designers and I've seen conflicting information on the internet.

Hello,
Malus means Penalty. We are going to fix this mistake in the upcoming patch.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Yes, Malus is often thought to mean the opposite of bonus, there's arguments for its use but I think changing to "Penalty" would be more straightforward yes.

..or simply explaining what it means. Preferably using text. I havn't yet sat through all the instructional videos so it might be in there, but that really isn't the ideal way to quickly look something up.

I kinda like the term "Malus" (Malice.) It gives it a more "corrupting" sound.

I thought it was intentional also and like the word. Besides, quick Google search will get you the definition.

You know, i thought the same.

But honestly, fancy looking and intentional or not - the translation in this game is pretty bad and it hurts my brain a bit.

What he said. It really fits the game. Please don't change it to something as inane as 'penalty'.

The context makes it pretty obvious IMHO. Still, not worth getting too bothered about if people are confused.

I propose just adding a ( + ) and ( - ) behind the two:
Bonus ( + ): Stuff
Malus ( - ): Stuff

But seriously, lack of education is rather depressing.

I learned the word "Malus" in like 7th or 8th grade.

Malus is not an english word. It is a type of tree, if anything (google it). This is a mistranslation of 'Minus' or negative.

Malice means 'with wrongful intention' or 'with intent to do evil'. Not exactly the same thing as a stat decrease, but a coincidence in pronunciation.

Nobody here lacks education, try to keep it constructive OK?

Malus makes sense. Take a look at the prefix and suffix and you have the meaning right there.

I honestly prefer malus. It sounds right in the context.

It's fine they used the word, because the meaning is correct, but it's irresponsible to not use a word that is not in the common vernacular of the country you are releasing the game to. All the mental posturing aside, it would be fine and benefit a greater number of possible players to use the word penalty in it's place. Or, if this is an international release, make a US English patch that would simply change certain words used.

As a side note, I hate conversations that hinge on semantics, it's just mental masturbation for the people involved. I once got into an intense debate of the word "anarchy", which literally means "no rulers". He kept arguing the proper greek root while I simply pointed out that arguing using a term that the majority of people understand to mean chaos or absolute lawlessness was stupid from point one.
