Why?

So, aside from all the other things people have pointed out that is potentially wrong with this release, I have to ask, do we need another scrolling shooter?
I had a quick play with the demo and I can say for sure I prefer Jamestown (short as it may be), even though it costs more.
But we also recently got those Gundemoneum games so, is there a compelling reason why someone should purchase Satazius over any of those?
Sidescrolling shooters have very few differences. Heck, if you already own a retro sidescrolling shooter, is there a reason to buy one on Steam at all?

You can apply that to any genre, really...

This is more of a classic game with less bullets and bigger hitboxes. It's vastly different from Jamestown and Gundemonium in that regard.

Whether it can compete at a similar asking price is another thing.

this one.

I'm still waiting for some good game with avoidable bullets. I really like Raptor and such. Jamestown is... a mess on the screen. Same reason I hate Shatter (and I was so excited buying that as I love games like Arkanoid).

This one is more classic, but tried demo and I need to pass. Died too much to environment, scrolling speed changing and unpredictable enemy/environment moves. Combine that with slow ship and keyboard controls and you get trial and error game where winning is matter of exact level knowledge and acting before things happened.

So no, not enough games like this. I'm still waiting for side scroller for me on Steam

The same could be applied to this thread.

You must be kidding me, we certainly do not have enough shmups, it's almost a dead genre for crying out loud. For every shmup we have like a hundred First Person Shooters.

I welcome more Shoot'em ups on Steam. In fact we need a lot more of them, the recent shmups that have surfaced are small "indie" productions. We need more games in the leagues of Shikigami No Shiro, Raiden and Ikaruga.

Until we have developers like Treasure, Irem and Cave on Steam, we are no way near filling the need for shmups.

Jamestown is not even the same shmup sub-genre as Satazius. It's like comparing Call of Duty to Arma 2.

Exactly.

We have a handful of shmup's on Steam, so that means we have more than enough?
Don't like the genre, or the game, don't buy it. But I don't see why the number of choices should be restricted. To claim we have more than enough games from a genre that is barely represented on Steam, and that rarely gets a new release nowadays, is a bit ridiculous.

In fact I wish the exact opposite was true. What I wouldn't give to have more games of the genre on Steam, for example something from Cave, Treasure or G.rev.

It's a bit depressing that most of the above referenced companies have been releasing games for the iPhone/iPad, and don't give the PC a chance.

Also, I would love to see some Beat 'em ups on Steam, and a few more fighting games (such as King of Fighters XIII) as well. I think the platform is the perfect home for these underappreciated genres.

Wait for ETHER VAPOR REMASTER that is going to hit Steam in 2012 (JANUARY OR FEBRUARY PERHAPS), CAPCOM AND NYU MEDIA MADE A DEAL FOR BRING SOME SHUMPS TO STEAM (SATAZIUS IS ONE OF THEM), AND ETHER VAPOR REMASTER (IN MY OPINION ) IS THE BEST OF THEM without any doubt!!, BUT SATAZIUS IS A COOL GAME ANIWAY...

Op doesn't know his history on shmups. Probably doesn't even know the games that spawned Jamestown or the fact that the Gundemonium games are years old. Next time, do your research before claiming shmups are saturating the industry.

That would be why practically every sentence was in the form of a question, indicating that yes, I do NOT know much about this genre and my opinion so far is that the variation between them is just too small to warrant owning more than one.
It's a shame because these types of games could really benefit from an overhaul I think. Online play, 3D visuals (as charming as the retro chic is).
Again, all opinion!

To answer your question of whether or not we need more of these games...

Yes

Jeffrey made a valid point, while there are thousands of shmups and only a handful of good ones, this is still a dying genre. These were the most popular games in the early to mid 80s and were gateway to some of the older audiences being the gamers they are today.

This is more likely why these types of games usually try to preserve the retro feel. Mainly if not only for the nostalgia. A lot of people won't appreciate these graphics which is fair; it's not for everyone.

I wouldn't mind another 2.5D shmup like Soldner Xeven though I was terribly bad at it, and while online play sounds like the perfect idea, without it having a next to perfect netcode, it would be useless.

These games at times require short precise movements that would be really hard to pull off without a perfect netcode.

All in all, as someone who has played a good chunk of shmups, I appreciate this game for being made.

If you are not a fan of the genre, sure you only need one or even none of those games, but if you are a fan you'll want to play more of these. Otherwise we could easily slim down the Steam database to one or two game per genre, or Nintendo could stop making marios J&Rs.

I like the genre and want more of those games on Steam (or similar plattforms). for eaxmple, if Cave ever ports some of their Shmups to the PC, I will immediately (if budget allows) preorder them.

I just want more proper shmups like Satazius rather than bullet hells.

This. So much. There is a very good reason that Gradius: Gaiden is one of my favorite games of all time, and it being both difficult and fun without feeling the need to plaster more bullets on screen at a time than pixels is definitely high up on the list.

PC has too few shmups. We want more shmups, like the ones on Xbox 360. There are so many good shmups but PC has only few on Steam.

These games are so rare on PC I don't mind paying full price for any of them. I'm hoping that enough people are buying them to encourage more people to publish more.

I'd also love for Capcom and Konami to release a classics pack just so I can play U.N. Squadron with some updated features and some of the Gladius series. There's even some Neo-Geo shooters I'd like to have in my Steam collection.

Bring them all I say.
