Can someone explain where the best places to build transportation are?

I think the tutorial said something about dark green or red but it was confusing to me.

I think the game says to look at overlays to see, say, where blue collar workers live, go to work, go to shop etc. and build lines to connect them.

Personally I go more for the methods of building tram or metro lines connecting major "hubs" (Rail stations, airports, department stores, Carnivals, Stadiums, Colleges, landmarks) and using buses to try to connect residential areas to the tram or metro and feed those lines.

But basically, at least in my experience, those "hub" places are the best places to build. Then it is just finding ways to feed those line more people.
