rules question

i used to play back in 94 or such, and just started again with dotp 2012, and while i mostly recall how things work, there is one thing i'm confused on.

back when i used to play you could activate artifacts at anytime like instances, but they don't seem to function like that anymore, such as using them after blockers have been declared.

have the rules changed in this regard of am i missing something.

Kinda a broad question... Would help if you were talking about a specific artifact in general... I'll give it a shot.

Artifact creatures still suffer from Summoning Sickness just as regular or legendary creatures without haste do. Thus, you can't activate tap abilities on an artifact creature you just cast.

If you are talking about an Equip cost, then in this case Equip abilities can only be activated any time you could cast a sorcery (so only during your main phases).

For 2012, I believe that covers all the topics in the case of artifacts...

It may also be, that you're missing the timing of "after the blockers are declared".
While you choose your creatures to block (one-by-one), you have not declared them as blockers, just chosen. Just when you press "Block" (or press Tab) to move to the next phase, it counts as "blockers declared", since you don't declare one by one, but all at once.
After you've declared those, there's a cool down before the damage distribution phase starts. During this cooldown, you can activate abilities as usual (see previous post for exclusions ofc).

PS:
same for attacking phase

A common question asked by old players concerns cards like Bottle Gnome.

As of M10, combat damage has its own phase. Meaning you can't have a creature die at the end of combat and still use its ability. A creature which has lethal damage on it dies instantly after combat (unless undestructable) and player cant activate its abilities.

Not sure f this is what you were asking, though.

The funny thing is that samsamsam has no clue what you are talking about , as damage never "went on stack" before sixth edition : That was only at 1999.
At the time Sam^3 played the game the combat phase was really similar to what it is now.

My guess is that the OP either missed the response time in the "Declare blockers" phase or, as mentioned, was referring to equipment ( that could only be used at sorcery speed) .

it was an equipment artifact, sorry. i just assumed they all fell under the same umbrella, as there was no real distinction while i was playing.
