Does the latest version of SE5 work well with Win7 x64 + latest hardware?

I'm a bit interested in playing this game, but have noticed around several boards that it doesn't bode well with Win7.
So, I've tried the outdated demo on my machine, and found that the framerate drops a tiny bit on the galaxy map, and drops much more in the research/construction menus.
I haven't played much further than this, but I've heard that once you get hundreds of ships the game gets unbearably slow when running the game on far more powerful machines. I know the visuals/gameplay are nowhere near as intensive on the gpu/cpu, even when the game was released.
Some of my specs:

Intel i5 2500k CPU
GeForce GTX 560 Ti
8 gigs of ram

Does the full patched version fix any of these problems? Would it be worth buying with my current machine?

Its not the machine, its Windows 7. From what I've read, this game is designed for DirectX 8.1, which is only emulated so its runs very slow. It should work fine on that hardware on Windows XP though.

Does this mean that I'd actually have to be running Windows XP for the game to run well? Or would setting the proper compatibility mode in Windows 7 do the trick?

I'm asking because I want to know before I buy it if possible, I don't have any computers running Windows XP, I only have Windows 7, so I don't want to make the purchase if the game absolutely cannot run properly on Windows 7.

it doesnt run well.
the game runs smooth on the sun-system screen but will slow down very much as soon as you open a window in the game (and it will get slower the longer you have this window open).
running it on win7 x64.
a very good game aslong as you have a proper OS to install it on.
it doesnt seem to run on wine too so xp or maybe 2k seems to be the only option.

you can still buy it if you know how to setup a VM and install it there

yes it works fine, and so does SE IV. No need to check any compatibility things, they both run fine by default.

It really doesn't.

Windows 7 and newer-gen graphic cards do not accelerate GDI which SE V uses extensively.

I personally haven't had any issues, there are plenty of troubleshooting solutions, either on the wikia or the offical sites though.

In the games' setting file you should also check to make sure these are set like so

Support Multithreading := TRUE
DirectX10 Fix 1 := TRUE

But, like I said for me running on Win 7 64b, I've had no issues and didn't have to change anything. Now, the game does start to process the turns extremely slow on the larger map. But, there's just no way around that, I'm at like turn 150 in my current game with 13 AI it takes a good 2 and half to 3 mins for a turn to complete and I've seen other's complain about up to 4 and half mins.

There also doesn't appear to be away to get the game to utilize more than to 2g's of ram. Anyway, the point is there's plenty of solutions to be found to different issues..that I can only assume come from the newer graphics cards and not direct x issues. I have a 6370M 512 (runs anything in lower res) running in this laptop and I think the only game I've ever had issues running was rage, but there has always been a solution.

There also seems to be a screen flickering issue, and changing a font opition appears to get rid of that, but all I've had to do was alt-tab and insure there were not browswers or anything in the backround and that usually stops it.

At least as an additional data point. It 'works' for me. Though I'm a bit perplexed why it only runs at maybe 30fps and 10-15fps on menus on a screaming GTX670
