Planning on Getting The Game, Need Tips

Hi, I LOVE Skyrim, but I keep hearing praise for this game (although it's usually followed by "Skyrim is a dumb console game for idiots!"). So I'm ordering it online. However, I hear that this game is REALLY unfriendly to new players and perfect skill builds are required in order to even be able to HIT an enemy. I would like some tips on skill builds (is it possible to have magic and a sword in different hands like in Skyrim? because that is my prefered playstyle, if not I'm thinking a basic sword and shield combo). Finally, I would also like to know about any good mods (I know about the graphics overhaul, but is there anything else?)

ha good timing, I just started this thread.

Hope it helps!

I would recommend the overhaul, as this actually allows quick casting....meaning you can have sword and shield out and still cast spells (loving it myself)

Thank you. Also, just for reference, how likely is an attack with say... 45 long blade to hit?

erm...id say about 1/4 success rate at the start of the game. Higher agility will help you hit more too (and dodge)

GCD: If you don't like the leveling this completely removes the need to worry about level up modifiers. Your attributes raise up as you raise your skills and also it makes some skills "influence" more than one attribute.

This is a great collection of mods, they all work together (if you're not using any other mods that alter what these mods alter. Like GCD that I linked to).

It's not possible to use magic in one hand and a sword in another. Unless there's a mod that enables it that I don't know about - but I haven't been able to find any.

EDIT: BTB's page links to a mod that apparently enables "Swift Casting" - Oblivion-style casting where you don't need to put your weapon away (as opposed to Skyrim, where you do need to have a free hand).

Wow, just... wow, I had no idea that so many mods for almost EVERYTHING existed. I think I'll just start with the Overhaul mod, any other basic ones that I should know about? also, I need tips on what armor type to focus on. How much platforming is there to justify light armor? And how is your max carry weight decided?

also: christ, I remember my first character trying to kill a mudcrab with low weapon skill and missing over and over and over again. hilarious. fortunately I was able to just grind away at it until my skill leveled up since I had a pretty high speed stat and the mudcrabs weren't fast enough to kill me. :P

The short version is that both light armor and heavy armor are both perfectly viable choices. Light armor is better if you want to sneak and have more room for carrying stuff, and heavy armor is better if you want to be an invincible tank but it's going to be extremely heavy. Medium armor provides a balance between both.

I recommend the UESP website for game advice. Here's their pages on armor:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Light_Armor
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Medium_Armor
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Heavy_Armor

As for carry weight, there's a page for that too!

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Encumbrance

Short version: It's your Strength score multiplied by 5. There are spells and potions to help with that.

Also: There isn't really any platforming but the ability to "climb" (read: jump) up mountains will come in handy if you don't want to bother with Levitation.

I read somewhere that if you wanted the best armor in the game, the Daedric armor, that heavy armor was the way to go.

I might be wrong though, because I haven't gotten that far into the game yet or know that much about it. I'm using light armor anyways because thieves are awesome.

I think it says a lot about the game when it came our in 2002 and people are still making mods for it. The TES modding community is outstanding!!!!

The first thing you need to be aware of is that all the TES games are massively open worlds. People who are used to very linear games often are overwhelmed by all the possibilities. A lot of them get impatient with that and give up. These games invite you to open up your mind and let you really exercise your imagination. Once you get used to that, linear stuff, well, it seems a little one-dimensional.

About selecting mods. I think you'll have a lot more options and better everything if you install MWSE - Morrowind Script Extension. That has given modders a world of better options and stuff to play with.

Here's to The Elder Scrolls!! May you explore with abandon.

Good Modding guides:

Povuholo's Morrowind
Something for Nobody
BTB's Morrowind Mod List
Morrowind Expanded
Gluby's Guide to a Modded Morrowind
Empirical Morrowind
Teleshoro's list o'mods
Theme and Specialty mod lists

The first 3 are up to date. Fourth one starts to show it's age. The other ones are a little bit order but they still give you an idea.

I wouldn´t give him too much advice. Give him enough so he survives and discovers the game on his own.

You should first look up the stats of the race you want to play and get the proper class:Khajit are good at sneaking and security so they make a good thief.

Then you shouldn´t just run wildly through the world. Take your time and get to make some quest first to earn some money.

Basic information: This game is build up on your stats which means when your shield skill is good you defend yourself more often with it.
You don´t play it like in skyrim where your reflexes are more important than your stats. Also you don´t get a map marker so listen to the people when they give you help with directions.

Also some actions like blocking are made automatically.

But MOST important is that you take your time to go through the world and become one with it. You have to feel as if you were part of the game.

Keep this in mind when creating your character

Chance to hit = Attacker's weapon skill * 1.25 + Attacker's Attack (e.g. Warrior = 10) - Defender's Sanctuary (e.g. Thief = 10) + (Attacker's Agility - Defender's Agility) * 0.25 + (Attacker's Luck - Defender's Luck) * 0.125

Chance to lockpick = 1.25(Security skill + Luck/10 + Agility/5)(Lockpick multiplier) - Lock Level

Thank you all, and a question about Guilds. Which guild has the most interesting and unique quests?
