Updates and slow internet
I bought two retail versions of Trine 2 (Collector's Edition) - husband and I want to play LAN co-op. Don't mind registering online at Steam, but so far we've been unable to play at all because the Steam Client is in the process of downloading something - on the Downloads pages it states "UPDATED 1,397.3 MB/1,658.0 MB" (i.e. 261 MB to go). At my speed of 14.4KB/s that's about 6 hours of downloading - each.
Here are my questions: 1. Is there a way to install Trine 2 off the local DVD disk and be able to play it without any further downloads necessary? 2. Is there a way to download an update once and apply it to both machines? 3. Do I need to install all the updates prior to and including v1.13 or does the 1.13 update include all the previous fixes? 4. Is there a way to find out how big the update is before starting the download? Feedback much appreciated. PS. The soundtrack is awesome! Last edited by msparanoia: 02-20-2012 at 01:38 PM. 1. Yes. However, Trine 2 received a few updates since launch and Steam requires you to update the game before being able to play. For future retail purchases use this guide to install from disc.
2. You can copy the Trine 2 folder, after Steam is done updating, to the same location on the second computer. It's usually being done to be able to use your account on a second PC without downloading everything again, but It should work here as well. 3. No. When Steam updates, you get the latest version. However, if you didn't update for a while, it will take longer to download. You also don't need to install anything. You're good to go after Steam is done updating. 4. Not as far as I know. P.S. The Lost Court Of Mushroom Caves is the best. EDIT: Forgot to link this regarding slow download speed. Last edited by The3rdPoliceman: 02-21-2012 at 06:52 AM. |

Thanks! Great advice and helpful information. I've done a reinstall forcing it from disc as suggested in the link, but it's made no difference. As you warned, Steam insists on pushing down currently available updates before allowing me to play for the first time. Bummer, but I'll just grin and bear it. At least I have to do it for only the one machine. Thanks also for the link to download speeds. I have ISDN 128 which is the equivalent of two 56K modems on a data line. My max dl speed is about 15K which I'm getting on Steam, so no problem there with AV's or servers. Best track? Oh, for me it's Searock Castle. Although... Track 1 had me at 36 seconds with the tambourine! Thanks again.. my download is chugging.. it's gonna be a long night.. :-) |

as far as #2 goes you could also try going to the Steam menu and selecting "Backup and Restore Games" which should allow you to create a backup (including the current updates to the game of course) and you can then import/restore on the other machine.
With such a slow internet connection it could be useful to save you download time in the future by creating local backups of your games. It'll even give you an option to split the files into the appropriates sizes to fit on CDs, DVDs, or a custom size if desired. Last edited by Shad0WeN: 02-22-2012 at 01:57 AM. |

Ah yes, our apologies for the big update sizes. We tried to keep it down but we've made so many changes since the launch date (and more importantly since the date of manufacturing the disks) that it's been unavoidable for the most part, and many of these updates are specifically for multiplayer. For new users I think the total update size is around 100 MB (however the Collector's Edition will get the OST and Artbook, which add to the amount, and in fact make up the 261 MB total in this case).
I hope you enjoy the game when it finally finishes downloading, and the tips here should help getting the second computer up and running without extra downloading.
