Find your steamapps folder (under {drive}:\Program Files*\Steam) and rename it to something like steamapps-ren then see if it starts. If not, rename ClientRegistry.blob to ClientRegistry.blob-old and try, or try the last thing first and the first thing last.

thank you for answering, however none of that worked. It loads if I use steam guard, not even sure what that is. but as soon as i go to play a game it says no connection. the log in hangs if i try to start the client the usual way. I am using windows xp SP3.

Hi! I was having the same problem and renaming my steamapps folder worked for me and now I can sign in! Thanks!
EDIT Now it's telling me I have to redownload all of my games, so that won't work

yeah tried that too with no luck, I can log into the client with TCP protocol and steam guard, but i eventually loose the connection, it did reconnect itself but that did not last long. the normal log in to the client just hangs. the log file basically says that when i am connecting with TCP I am getting disconnected. I am a bit of a novice with this connection stuff.

I'm having the same problem. I've had Steam "regenerate", but no dice as of yet.

Same problem here.
I noticed on the Steam Downtime thread that they were working on some network changes a couple hours ago. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a lingering network issue related to the maintenance that's causing some login problems. I'd suggest giving it another couple hours then try again. |

And Mike Blaszczak from Valve just posted that they are aware of the issue and are working on it.

Same issue here, at least they're working on it. Was just about to buy STALKER - Clear Sky and get down to business too.

well it looks as if all my games, even non-steam games, are either slowing to the point of crash, never initialize or simply crash outright. strange thing though, flash player has also been crashing causing you tube to fail. its more than the client never logging in. going to a previous graphics driver did not fix anything either. anyone else having the same problem?

If you used windows system restore, then you broke your drivers, and browser plugins. need to re-download and install erroneous driver to fix.

I did do a system restore but the problem was before I did so. I tried re-downloading and reinstalling the drivers but it did not work. i used the windows disk de-fragmenter, I wonder if that has anything to do with it.
