How to use a PlayStation 3 Controller

Now I don't know about everyone else, but personally I've always preferred to play RPGs with a controller. I would have gotten The Last Remnant for a console if consoles supported decent resolutions. And since I prefer the PlayStation controller, I decided to find out how to make it work. So here I am - using a PlayStation 3 controller and playing The Last Remnant.

Now there's one important step to this. If you want this to work, it's important that you follow everything here Step-by-step, or it won't work. Also, if you're using the 64bit version of Windows, you're screwed (thus far).

  • Step 1: Plug in your PlayStation 3 Controller to your PC.
  • Step 2: Download sixaxisdriver.rar and extract it using WinRAR.
  • Step 3: Run sixaxisdriver.exe and install SixaxisDriver.
  • Step 4: Run DriverLoader.exe (Default install location - C:\Program Files\SixaxisDriver), and click on Load Driver.
  • Step 5: Exit everything and Reboot your PC.
  • Step 6: Go into your Control Panel and open the Game Controllers tab. You should find the PlayStation 3 Controller registered. Click on Properties and see if the buttons are working - if they are, click on settings and calibrate the Controller.
  • Step 7: The PlayStation 3 Controller should now be working with The Last Remnant, just go into settings and change the controller settings to fit your needs. By default, the Circle is set to ENTER and the X is set to EXIT (just like in Japanese games).

And Enjoy!

I'll probably be back and post more about how to use the controller's wireless feature later.

Awesome guide, saves people from googling I was under the impression that bluetooth connection didn't work yet, maybe they fixed it since I last checked!

Great post, and thank you, just wondering, did I mess something up or will these buttons always show up as 1-9 instead of X,O, Triangle and Square? I guess I'll fool around with it a bit more.

I don't believe you can change those, since the PlayStation 3 Controller isn't officially supported by The Last Remnant.

Absolutely BEST THING I'VE READ on the internet in a while. I have a PS3 controller but no PS3 (long story), and I've almost been tempted in buying an XBox 360 controller for windows. But I dislike XBox controllers and.. I already have a PS3 controller. Hopefully this will work with other games too.

I'm going to go give this a try. Thanks again!

This should work with any game that actively supports "a controller."

Certain games only support specific controllers (like Braid only supports an Xbox 360 Controller, nothing else), it won't work on those games.

Oh.... bugger. I recently bought Braid this weekend, playing it on my PS3 controller would've been great. Oh well. (And I also have Lost Planet...)

Hm, at first I didn't think the driver was working (because I foolishly hadn't plugged in the PS3 controller yet) so I clicked on the 'UPDATE' link of DriverLoader.exe, leading me to http://www.motiongame.net/ps3
So I installed that instead, and now my controller uses that driver. Do you know if it's any different/better/worse?

Either way, the PS3 controller is working fine on my Last Remnant Demo, so, glad to know it works!

It supports Rumble features, but that feature doesn't really work. Especially since PC games don't have rumble. It -should- work on emulated games such as Mario Kart 64, but I can't verify that.

*Update* I've gotten my PS3 controller working with Braid and Geometry Wars.

Thanks to this post here, I downloaded Xpadder and it allows you to map the PS3's buttons to any button on the keyboard AND MOUSE! It's really customisable and advanced. Oh man, the possibilities are endless, this is amazing.
Note: when setting up Xpadder, you might want to import these images into the program when configuring buttons. (because the program doesn't actually know what your controller looks like)
Dualshock 3 (Black)
Dualshock 3 (Silver)
or just feel free to search for your own images, but those ones separate the R1 and R2 buttons etc so it makes it easier.

Hah, so much for falling for micro$oft's tricks and buying an XBox360 controller when I could have just used my Dualshock 3 all along.

Thanks for letting me know about the driver in the first place, can't believe I never considered the possibility of hooking up my PS3 controller to my PC.

That's not true. PC games do have rumble if you the controller is plugged in. I've experienced this so far with PoP, DMC4, and TLR. All rumble with my 360 controller plugged in.

Yeah, but only with a 360 controller. Others are not supported by Microsoft.
