Question Portal 2 Release Ideas

Hey guys, just wondering what/when do you think the sequel (prequel?) to Portal will be.

I know a few people are hypothesising that it will be released with Half-Life EP 3.

What do you think?

Personally I don't mind. I know they've set it up to coincide with the HL series at some stage. I just wish there'd be some info on Portal 2.

I don't have a guess other than I doubt we'd see a lease date before next fall.

Valve likely doesn't want promote future games to far in advance to avoid not delivering on promises\features\dates that later get changed or even cut from a game. Some game companies have hyped a game that take years longer than planned, and the final game (if not cancelled) is significantly different than what was promised years before. Freelancer is one good example. And to the extreme, of course, is the infamous Duke Nukem Forever, which may forever stay as vaporware just so that it came remain the #1 vaporware game of all time. As vaporware DNF can be the greatest game ever that always ends up delayed for any number of fictitious reasons that creators want to make as part of its never ending history of bad luck, layoffs, engine rewrites, cancellations, rebirths, etc, etc.

I sure wish I could convince more people on the City of heroes forums to understand that, Noble. We deal with 3 month or so intervals of Issues, free release content. And every single time, there are the cires of "OMG TELL US WHAT WE WILL SEEEEE". They stopped doing that long ago. Only when things are ready in beta, or even past closed beta, do they start releasing small amounts of information.

In games like this one, which aren't an ongoing live game but releases punctuated by long periods of waiting, it makes far more sense to NOT tell anyone anything until the product's almost upon us.

Hey guys, that's what I thought too. I'm just getting impatient. I was kind of hoping that it'd be near completion. Sort of wishing it'd be out in time for Christmas otherwise it's into 2010 which is technically a year away.

I'm generally not all that into the mad hype that surrounds some releases. I tend to skip watching the trailers and reading reviews. I like to buy it and then see what everyone else thinks. I'm hoping that they'll relaunch a viral campagin or at least change some of the aperture science website. To be honest I'd love it if they said "hey it's made and it's available NOW!". I hate the wait between the announcement and the release date.

They won't announce anything to early cause if they do its actually more damaging then not saying anything.

You see how it works is when a developer starts showing off stuff and announcing things they have a certain period of time to satisfy peoples curiosity, keep them interested, and then release. They start too early and people interest will drop off.

Not saying anything at all is actually better in this respect, as then they can wait, building peak interest right on release meaning more sales and stuff.

If a Portal release of any kind was going to be ready for the Christmas season, Valve would likely be talking about it right now because it would be mostly completed if not already finished.

IMHO, a new Portal game or new content coming from Valve is many months away, so for new Portal excitement you'll need to look to mods\maps that are freely available for download.

If you have not played the Flash Map pack version (or whatever is it called), that's available for free and has a few extra tricks not found Portal.

Portal: Prelude was decent too.

I thought about a confrontation scene with the man behind aperture, cave johnsson. You enter a normal room like any test room, only it's like a hall. You walk to the end and the ground opens and out comes this big machine with cave's brains in it. He starts talking and asks you to play chess with him. (He makes a chair and a chess board appear and plays it with a robotic arm) He seems to be civiliced and you play chess with him. (It could be a cutscene or you actually play it.) He loses and gets mad and to your left and right come out of the ground a row of rocket turrets. You have to skillfully avoid the rockets and one by one redirect the rockets at the turrets to destroy them. Then Cave sends you trough the floor and you land in a broken down part of the facility. It's like a sewer. Sewage used to flow out of the drains you are in. But not anymore. Behind you the pipe is closed off by gates and you go forward and get out trough a hole in the pipe. You have to work your way back up and you get back into cave johnsson's room trough a small hole in the back of the room. (you open it up on the other side) Then you smash the glass tube in wich his brain is and he garbles nonsence while the fluid leaks out and the room brakes down, everything (including tiles and walls) gets lifted up and you have to move from one floating piece of destroyed wall or w/e to another to reach the top where there's a blinding light and you come outside and TADA! The end!

BUT THEN! CAVE JOHNSSON REAPPEARS AS MECHA JOHNSSON! YOU MUST DEFEAT HIM CHELL-SAN!! *epic battle* You defeat him and get cake yaaaay. (this is a joke btw)

If they do, they need to make the puzzles as challenging as Braid's.

I doubt they would release Portal 2 this year anyways, there are so many games coming out for the following months. I expect it to be out by summer of 2010.

Go play that game.

If you like it so much, why don't you marry it?
