Rocket Science

Well....I'm a little confused. I understand that Portal had past troubles with the Achievements but they are fixed now.

Well I have all of them, except the Rocket Science one (which is the 18 Silver Medals), so yes, that means I have all my golds.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

My Portal Achievements

Thanks in advance for any info people can give me.

I haven't done any achievements because I've always played offline (just saying I don't necessarily know what I'm talking about). Did you play the applicable challenge maps???

Like I said, I don't necessarily know of what I speak...

Did you ever jump straight from bronze to gold?

I was definitely online when I get it. And I believe I skipped bronze. I got gold on everything...and then when I got to Champer 18 Time challenge I got silver. After a couple of tries later, I got Gold.

I got the notifications for the Bronze, Silver and Gold achievements, but then the silver one hasn't registered. The bronze has registered, and that is the one I basically skipped.

As an extra thing.....I don't think I got any Bronze awards, but I know I got a few Silver awards.

Anything else anyone needs to know about this, just ask. Same goes for if you require me to clarify something a bit more in-depth.

It is the UK version of The Orange Box on PC incase that makes ANY difference.

try going through some of the challenges again and getting silver, some of the maps may not have registered the silver correctly

This happened to me as well. I finally got the a3chievement when I formatted my computer, and played portal again. So maybe there is a file you can delete somewhere?

Well, I'm be completely re-formatting shortly after X-mas when I get a new GPU, (I'll also be re-installing XP from scratch, and making my PC dual boot XP and W7). Before anyone criticises my choice to dual boot......I'm not paying extra money on W7 Pro, when W7 Home Premium will be almost half price until the end of the year, and I already have a copy of XP.

But anyway's, back on track; I've just uninstalled Portal, and it's re-downloading/installing as I write this.
I doubt just doing that will resolve the issue (although it would be nice. lol) but I guess it's worth a shot anyway for the hell of it. I'll just play through all the maps on Silver.

EDIT: Well surprise surprise, re-installing it didn't work. I'm clearing my saves and going for the silvers again =[

An update would be nice, if it works. I hope it does, even if it doesn't make any sense...

Don't see why anyone would criticize a dual boot (if they do, that's their problem--it's your rig). I know at least one person here who has a dual XP/Win7 system.

OK, here is exactly what I've done.

1) Uninstalled and reinstalled Portal using Steam
2) Deleted "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\<steamname>\Portal\"
3) Played Portal up until Chamber 19 to unlock all the chambers
4) Made sure I got silver on all of them

Now I know that was the long way round.....but I wasn't going to take any chances.

I am still not clear as to what caused this, and I doubt I will ever know. All I will say is just make sure you get Bronze, Silver and Gold on all of Challenge Maps.

Thank you to everyone for their help.

@gorpie
As you may (or may not) know, "Windows XP Mode" still requires a copy of XP, and it is then ran through a virtual machine. So it's a waste of time playing games on "XP mode".
As soon as I read that, I used my common sense and decided on dual boot. I'm toying with the idea of tri-booting Windows 2000, XP and W7. (W2k only due to the fact I have literally 2 games that don't entirely agree with XP (although I don't know about W7 yet. lol))

EDIT: If you now follow the link to my Portal Achievments, I have now got all of them.

As far as what caused it, you might never know. Programmers can only fix bugs that can be identified to cause problems for lots of users (due to cost). For the rest of the users, there are workarounds, like doing what you did.

Actually, the dual-boot person I know has Vista/7. I still have only XP and don't plan on dual booting in my next system. (Probably a better idea than keeping 2-3 old computers around, though...)

Your completely right.....I doubt many people had the same problem, so it's not cost effective to fix this bug.

I'm skipping Vista.....I'm imagining it never existed, and that W7 is the sequel to XP. lol.
This is still my first computer......I've only upgraded my CPU. But admittedly that is because I had enough money to make an awesome first computer. lol.
My mobo is a bit outdated, and I'm only on 2GB RAM and have an nVidia 8600GT. Graphics card is the priority there. lol.
I recently got an 800W PSU, so that will be fine for years. lol.

Hey my nvidia 8500 is new and runs great, don't be knocking the better version... o.o I too am pretty well ignoring Vista. Like I ignored ME, and 2k and 95. I went from 3.1 to 98 to XP. I may eventually get to 7 but ... pff. No money, and I like the games I can play on xp.

Don't forget that W7 Home Premium is near half price until the end of the year.
For the UK it's £80, then goes up too £150 after Dec 31st =[
I'm getting mine shortly before x-mas I hope.
I'm saving up for an ATI Radeon HD 5870, that will be the first component in my compy to break the £80 barrier. lol.
