Red face "Steam 732897" SOMEONE HELP PLZ!!!!!!!!!!

FIRST OF ALL I understand this is a repeated thread but this seems to be a pretty big issue with QUITE a few users. So I wanted to get it out there in one thread so that MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, someone might know SOMETHING AT ALL about this big problem. Seeing as every single one of the threads I have looked at wind up in a dead end. Here is the situation:

In my particular case, my Steam client will not load. It will show connecting to blah and it will lock down and not continue to bring up the steam client. I will then have to ctrl alt del and end the process. Upon doing so a message comes back stating "Steam 732897" is not working, or something of such.

Also here are others complaints on the same problem:
enabled3k-
/So, I have been using steam for about a year on this computer. but yesterday as i started my computer and waited for everything to boot up, i got this error saying "Steam 732897 has stopped working" after seeing that, I double clicked the shortcut on my desktop and got the same error. about ever 5-6 times of trying it i get a different error saying "Steam is already running in a different windows user session" which means that the steam.exe shows up in the process tab on the task manager.

Things ive tried
1. Restarting Computer.
2. Reinstalled Steam (multiple times)
3. Running Steam as an Administrator.
4. Pounding fist on keyboard and yelling at monitor.
5. Deleting .Blob file and others that help other errors.

Has anyone ever got this error and knows how to fix it? if so please give me a hand. This is really getting annoying/

I'm sure that I and anyone else that has this complication will have great relief if there is anyone that has any information at all that will fix this.

"Steam 732897" is the internal name of the executable. I don't know what that is since that causes Windows 7 to show the program name as "Steam 732897".

At any rate the dialog is a normal Windows dialog and is a result of trying to end the process, it is not anything to do with your Steam problem.

Here are some things you can try:

Remove the clientregistry.blob file from your Steam directory. Steam should redownload it and if it was corrupted this will fix your problem.

Check to be sure the needed ports are open in your router or firewall. You only need them open "outgoing", not "incoming". Most routers or firewalls will allow this by default*. Search the Support section of steampowered.com to find the list of ports that need to be open.

* - Schools and businesses tend to be more picky about what they will let their students/employees do and most probably block Steam.

I just got this error today. I was using steam last night until 2:30am playing borderlands with no problems. Wake up, turned on PC and now what? Is my account "broken" ?

Well..making a bit of progress. I just went to my laptop to login to steam and it works with all of steams latest updates. both my desktop and laptop use Vista 64 bit, and both PC's are under a year old.

So the problem appears to be the actual PC itself somehow. After the laptop completes windows updates I'll go download Dragon Origins and see if that was the problem? I pre-installed it last night before going to bed...I'm wondering if this had anything to do with it?

I actually just posted a new thread with this same exact issue. It is a problem with my steam account itself though and not my computer or the steam program as I am able to log in with a different account.

This is really frustrating, I just want to play some Dragon Age.

This issue alone is enough for me to quit buying games from steam. Not only is it becoming more common, it appears to hit anyone at random. People with 32bit-64bit machines, multiple os's, etc and an occasional random fix for some people are working although most are not working at all. On top of all this there seems to be no response from any admins on this issue...Why am I buying games here again?

It's a shame too because I love how the client works and I just started buying nearly all of my games from steam for about the last 8 months. I recently moved to Maui and a drive to the "local" game store is about an hour away. Digital downloads have become a blessing..and now a curse!

Other download gaming sites have their issues, but they will never be locked out of all their games. This is the only real flaw that Steam has imo, but it's a big one.

Right now I'm backing up my steamapps folder before I start experimenting with the different repair instances that probably won't work. Debating just format/reinstalling my desktop. If anyone is reading and has had this exact 732897 issue, post and tell us what you did before you last logged out.

After playing Borderlands for a few hours last night. I dl'd Dragon Age over night, woke up went to install. It showed the CD-Keys and wouldn't actually run the game. Just acted like nothing happend. Tried closing and reopening steam, reboots, etc. It just wasn't running the game. OK this happend to me before. I then closed steam and did a repair install (it worked last time!@#$) and recieved this error.

I had the very same problem. I was trying to get my Dragon Age preorder download to decrypt, and people on the forums suggested restarting Steam. When I did that, I got stuck at the "Logging into account" popup, which stopped responding every time. I'm back up and running now. I uninstalled Steam, redownloaded it and installed it. I ended up deleting the steamapps folder, but I recently ugraded to Win7, so I hardly had any games in it anyway. Now I'm back into Steam, but I'm having to download Dragon Age again. Hopefully it will work this time, because it's not the encrypted preorder game files... but we'll see (I probably will also miss out on the preorder bonuses--but maybe those are tied to the CD Key. We'll see about that too.) Good luck, guys.

WOW progress!

Here's what I did using Windows Vista 64

EDIT: Forgot to mention! Backup your steamapps folder!! You will need this for all your saved games.

I uninstalled steam from the control panel.

Open regedit. (start menu and just type regedit)

Proceed through All directories for a Valve/Steam folder and delete them. There are only 3 if I remember correctly. They are located in ROOT under Valve.SteamP2P and steam. Then go under CURRENT USER -> Software, scroll down to Valve. Delete the entire directory.

Next, reboot. Then reinstall steam. I installed in a different directory this time not the default.

Now I am going to try and move my apps folder over and see if this works correctly. I hope this works for the rest of you guys out there! I'll edit this post when I get a game running normally.

All my games work except for Dragon Age. Not surprised. Re-downloading it now..All my save games are intact! I really hope this works for the rest of you guys out there.

From what I can tell, this is only a temporary fix. I did all of this (and more) and it still came back, so I doubt it has anything to do with us.

But, I would recommend using CCleaner - my friend used it and he noticed it flagged a lot of steam related stuff, and he hasn't had the problem yet.

I fixed it on my machine by uninstalling Steam and deleting all the references to Steam in my registry and then reinstalling. Just be sure to backup your steamapps folder.

It has happened several times to me, and I have always been able to fix it by deleting my clientregistry.blob

I have the answer!!!!

You try to run steam and it crashes with "steam 732897 has stopped responding" ?

And the answer is....

Check your system date... It's probably 2099 instead of 2009.

And tadamm!!! Problem solved. At least it worked for me...
