SecuROM Help

I'm having a bit of trouble with SecuRom at the moment. I'm not a fan of it, but it's not reason enough for me to not buy a game if I'm interested in it.

Anyway, the other day I bought Borderlands and it was working just fine. Been playing it for the past three days without a hitch. I tried playing it today, but it won't load. The DVD won't even show up in my drive. So I tried a different disc and that was working fine. I then tried another SecuROM game (Red Alert 3) and the same problem. No disc showing up in the drive, so I came to the conclusion that SecuROM is somehow messing me up. I know it will prevent games from running if it finds conflicting software on the machine, but I don't know what could be the problem. The only thing (I think) that I have installed since yesterday was Malwarebytes and I've already removed that, but it still won't launch.

Is there anything I can do other than reformat? Is there a list of programs I could look at and see why SecuRom thinks I have a pirated copy?

Google your DVD drive and model number and stick 'Securom' at the end.

Unistall and re-install your DVD drive.

Unistall existing Securom driver stuff:

If you want to completely remove SecuROM after uninstalling this game, including the 'SecuROM User Access' Service it installs in Windows, follow these steps:

1. Uninstall the game as normal.
2. Manually delete the game directory (typically \Program Files\Atari\Crashday-demo\
3. Go to Start>Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) and press Enter.
4. Go to the 'Securom User Access' Service, double click on it, click Stop and then set it to Disabled.
5. Go to \Windows\System32\ directory and delete the UAService7.exe file.
6. Go to Start>Run and type "sc delete useraccess7" (without quotes) and press Enter.

Note: This Service may be recreated by one of your other SecuROM games, in which case you will have to keep it running to play them.

The following steps are very risky and only for people who are certain none of their currently installed games use or need SecuROM:

7. Go to \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ and delete the SecuROM sub-directory.
8. Go to Start>Run and type "Regedit" (without quotes) and press Enter. Then find the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SecuROM] key and delete it if possible.

Ok, I'm uninstalling it as I'm typing this and will then remove SecuROM and reinstall it again. I'm really annoyed at the fact that I as an honest customer have to jump through these hoops while the pirates are happily roaming through Pandora ...

SecuROM and other DRM system's biggest problem is that EVERYBODY complains about it but NOBODY offers any ideas for viable alternatives.

Don't feel alone I have to have a custom patch from Securom for FEAR1 to run on Vista32 and Win7 and am going to have to do the same for the first mission pack for FEAR1 and for Ghost Recon. The good ole invisible disc or put it into a drive that doesn't exist shtick every time. Of all the DRM's I hate Securon the most. At least Tages and Starforce update theirs.

No but as T_flight said we do get double DRM'd by some 3rd party publishers that can lead to problems considering the portability of Steam which is one of my favorite Steam benefits. Install limits conflict with that benefit!

Uhuh. Just wait till the day you have no Internet or you can't connect to the Steam servers. Then you'll find out that Steam can be just as onerous as SecuROM.

The funny thing is, that I almost bought it over Steam, which does not feature SecuROM. I've got a retail copy, which I got for a lesser price than the Steam version. *sigh*

//Edit

Finally got SecuROM removed and it's now recognising the disc. Just have to reinstall it again, thanks for the help, Tony.

I think he means when your internet may temporarily disconnect, maybe from ISP downtime or adapter malfunctions, and I know the point he's trying to make; I've had the same problem too many times :|

If the Steam servers get shut down in the future, Valve have stated that they will release a patch that will allow people to continue to play their games. Dunno about the non-Valve games on Steam though.

I've had optical drives go hinky on me just out of the blue. You could suspect SecuROM, but not conclude that it's SecuROM.

Looks pretty likely though seeing as it was only SecuROM games that were causing the DVD drive to act up.

I don't know if you're being stupid or sarcastic, but I'll assume you're just being stupid because you are definitely being insulting which is a stupid way to act.

Nothing is perfect, one day you may wake up and decide to play some games, turn on your computer and find out that due to a tecknical problem that has nothing to do with money you find you have no internet connection. You call your ISP and they tell you that the failure is a major one and they don't know how long it will take to fix. Bye-bye games.

Is that in writing as part of an enforcible agreement? If not good luck with that!

I won't deny Steam is a great system but just as investment counselors are always telling you to not put everything in one place but to diversify, and then there's the old saying about not putting all your eggs in one basket.

And no, I'm not trying to vouch for DRM. But I'm also not whining about it either. I accept it as a fact of life with computers. As long as there are people willing to steal, companies will continue to use methods they think will help to minimize the damage the stealing does and that means DRM, so be it.

Not really, your games will still be there when you get your internet back. And there's offline mode as well.

I think it was just a Valve employee saying it on the forums, can't remember where the post is, it was a while back now. I dunno if EA has ever said anything like that with SecuROM. Also, can you fix your top quote? Makes it looks like I posted that.
