WORK-AROUND: Connect to the CaseGuest Wi-Fi. It is not monitored as much or something, becuase I can play TF2 all I want on there, using the server browser too. The pings are fine, generally between 30 and 50. My friends and I have been doing this for weeks this year and its been perfect the entire time. Sidenote: Last year, I was in the freshmen dorms and everything worked fine on the wired connection (I could get pings of <10). The server browser problem started this year. *This is only a problem for games that use the Steam server browser. Ex: TF2, CS:S, DoD:S, KF, RO, All HL1 based games, any Source mods. L4D uses matchmaking does not suffer from this problem. Case Western Reserve University Cleveland Ohio |

Loughborough University, UK. Steam was fully functional (at least before the L4D2 preload) in my room in Halls of Residence.

Aberdeen, Scotland (Craibstone Campus) Steam works in halls over the wifi or ethernet. Since it's a shared connection your ping is variable. |

Although it's already listed, I've been hearing about how some people using RezNet (on-campus residence access) cannot connect to Steam. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones. |

University of Nebraska at Omaha runs it just fine.
Except at the Durham Science Center, it does not work there. But at PKI and Scott Village, it works fine. |

Lincoln, Nebraska Steam will work anywhere on campus, but dorm residents have a 500MB per day download quota before their speed will be affected. |

steam has now been unblocked on the network as the latest update means it can be separated from academic traffic or something like that. Anyway the end result is we can now game from halls. Epic. EDIT: well seeing as the policy only allows "official servers" which of course steam games dont actually have we cant play anything. Basically you can: run steam (IF you already have the latest version) use steam friends run all your steam games But you cant: Connect to any online servers install a game I dont yet know whether steam will update once you have the new version as there havent been any updates since I got it online. I cant seem to install any games either. So really, although its "online" its basically offline mode access but friends works as well. Last edited by mrsoftware : 11-01-2009 at 12:04 PM. |

An update on Case Western's status:
I've spoken with some of the IT people here and it seems that the problem is stemnming from a Steam update over the summer to make server browsing more efficient. The upshot is that when browsing the server list Steam breaks Case Western's firewall cap on connections (caps at 25000 or something). This doesn't explain why my internet gets shut off even if I connect through console without ever opening the server browser. Either way the situation does not look good as Case seems to have it on the backburner (i.e. they don't give a ♥♥♥♥) and are unwilling to change the firewall etc / find a way to add an exception. |

Just noticed a lot of people from Case jumped in (didn't read previous page before).
Thanks for the updates. I assume that the reason we get suspended even without using the server browser is because of the "background polling"? Quote:

Notre Dame (South Bend), Indiana Steam works fine, though ethernet is reccommended over wifi because of occasional lag spikes on the wireless network Works everywhere I've been able to get onto the main wireless network, which is more or less campus-wide |

-2) Lawrence, KS -3) Steam works! -4) Anywhere with a RESNET connection -- i.e., in dormitories. Have yet to try on campus Wi-fi, since my computer is not a laptop. |
