When you take a nifty accessory and make it ultra-rare with no real way to influence getting it, things like this happen. It's not exactly new, and takes simple knowledge of psychology to understand.

A VIRTUAL IN GAME COSMETIC ITEM "AKA" A HAT

Just let it go guys, seriously, the amount of ranting, complaints, and overall drama over hats that do nothing is beyond dumb, way beyond dumb.

Now the latest rant is people whining over getting a hat for preordering Left 4 Dead 2. Notice that most of the people aren't complaining that they won't be getting the hat, but that they already went and spent 45$ on a game just to get one. That they were forced to spend 45$ because they cannot miss out on an in game item.

You don't have to have every hat.

This is a game.

Put that into perspective, and hats will become meaningless.
Gimme your hat or I swear to god, I'll eat your children! :P

Actually if you put it into perspective, you'll realize that it's just a video game, the whole thing is just pixels on a screen.

Complaining about hats is the same thing as complaining about an overpowered/underpowered weapon... It's just pixels on a screen, that don't really do anything in real life.
Hats are in the game, so people will want them. Deal with it.

hats are worthless, as a hat owner I think valve should simply remove all hats from the game and laugh at us all for being complete morons scrambling for hats.

I'm calling it "hat toxicosis" for now until more research is done and a more suitable name is given.

"Deal with it." says the forum goer named "YesNoHat".

The first step to addressing your disease is admitting that you have a problem.

The first step in embracing your disease is defending it.

Yes in fact, I do have a problem with the terrible random drop system.

Yeah, you make a good point, my friend. +rep.

When you have a game like TF2 that's, in all honesty, sub par at best, all this hat rage looks silly. Obsessing over a cosmetic item is foolish, especially in a game so broken at it's core.

No one likes the random drop system, I'm yet to meet someone who does.

The fact still remains though that the hats are purely cosmetic, and people obsessing over them is to put simply, really dumb.
