Drunk Wisconsin woman calls 911 on herself,

She was too drunk to drive safely, but yet sober enough to have the ability to call police.

Perhaps she deserves some leniency from the judge since she had enough wit to recognize that she was a threat and stopped herself.

Leniency for doing what any respectable person should do? Is that the standard now? Rewarding normal behavior? Bleh. An interesting read nonetheless.

leniency and reward are two completely separate things. She made a sacrifice that quite possibly saved a life.

Oh, I get VF's point: punishment is deserved. Much like a bank robber who successfully robs a bank but later turns himself in, the perp will probably get a little bit less punishment for admitting the crime.

I figure that if Wisconsin has a minimum penalty for drunk driving, then that is what the judge will use. Perhaps a fine and community service.

I believe that drugs and copyright offenses are the only ones with mandatory minimums, however I could be wrong (that may just be federal, not local). I think (good) politicans try to avoid mandatory minimums generally, because it drastically shifts the balance of power in the courthouse (one supreme court justice was quoted saying that in mandatory minimums, the prosecutor had more power than he did).
