Dr. freeeeemann's posts are way worse than nightcabbage's. Now that's a rather daft allegation isn't it? I would need to explain WHY with a specific example such as: Dr. freeeeemann's posts are way worse than nightcabbage's because Dr. freeeeemann never cites specific examples to back up his claims. See, now isn't that better? I like XP, even though I've used both Vista and Windows 7 for some time now. XP is a solid, fast OS. One of Windows' best quite frankly. Agreed, but setting it up can be a pain and it feels so old now. I just installed it a while ago for one of my dad's clients. It takes so long to DL all the updates and newest internet browsers and antivirus programs and Adobe Reader and flash. I mean, you've got the same problem with the new ones obviously but at least 7's got enough right out of install.

Actually, Windows 7 has gotten rid of some of the bloat. It doesn't even come with a mail client now. Technically it comes with "less" than Vista and, in some ways, even XP (that's only in some areas though). Give it a few more years and you'll be needing to download just as many updates with a reformat...

I have no idea why people insist on following the current trend and buying Intel at this point considering how cheap everything AMD is , video and CPU. You get way more bang for your buck buying AMD. I did, don't regret it a bit. My 4850 ice q 4 was only 100 bucks used 6 months ago and it runs everything great.

there was an article a while back about forcing maximum detail in source at maximum distance by disabling the LOD
(jaw-dropping was a term I would use. Dark messiah looking pretty awesome actually on the Arcane's 06 branch of the engine) http://www.pcgameshardware.com/scree...Messiah_02.png http://www.pcgameshardware.com/scree...Messiah_04.png http://www.pcgameshardware.com/scree...Messiah_14.png taken from http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,6...axed-out/News/ there have been "config" files knocking around since early HL2 days, but like your keys you can never find them when you need them. from tweak guides these are the things you want to be playing with if you can find a way of knocking off the LOD totally like they described, feel free to comment otherwise he's all I could find lod_TransitionDist [range] - The distance at which the lod is reduced on objects. The higher this range, the lower your performance but the better distant objects will appear. r_lod [-8 to 8] - Determines the rate at which level of detail (lod) is stripped from objects as they recede away from the player. The lower the value, the more detail remains visible on objects as they progress into the distance, reducing performance but increasing image quality. cl_detaildist [range] - Determines the range at which detail props are shown (e.g. grass). Reducing this setting can increase performance, and conversely increasing this setting will improve image quality through more detail at the cost of performance. cl_detailfade [range] - Determines the range at which detail props fade into view. Increasing this value can raise performance. cl_maxrenderable_dist [distance] - Specifies the maximum distance from the camera at which things will be rendered. The smaller the number, the less will be rendered, improving performance (cheat). mat_picmip [-10-5] - This variable is the same as the Texture Detail in-game setting, and hence controls how detailed textures appear in Source games. However depending on the game, you can raise this value to further reduce the quality of the textures and possibly improve performance (and more importantly reduce stuttering), or you can use negative values to provide increasingly sharper textures. In HL2: Ep 2, a value of -1 equals Very High, but in games like Team Fortress 2 you can use -10 to get the absolute highest quality textures possible. |

Then other people replied to those replies ("no he doesn't need to consider a diff video card"), etc. Yes, it has evolved/devolved into various debates, but OP wasn't totally ignored. |
