Building new computer.

K so my current one is basically crap for all steam games, i get like 9-20 fps on tf2 with all settings lowered.
Specs according to dxdiag:

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz (2 CPU's)
Memory: 1024Mb RAM
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition(5.1 build 2600)
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce FX 5500, 256Mb memory, 32 bit, 60Hz
Monitor: Dell D1226H
Ive already got a mouse, a keyboard and speakers as well.

I reckon my processor is fine. I could keep that and the monitor. I also dont really think a new operating system will help that much. But im no expert.

I got $690 but that might come to about $950 soon.
Halp plz.

correct me if im wrong, but i think you will need a new cpu i mean pentium 4 is pretty old, get an i5 750 if you can (Y)
as for ram, you're gonna need 3-4 gigs as thats pretty standard nowadays
graphics, go for an ati hd 4850, they're pretty cheap i think
good luck!

An i5 would be great as its like a cheap i7 core, and a good 4 gig ram kit won't set you back mutch, then I would spend any money you had left on a good Gpu, An ATI Hd 4850 isnt bad, and nor would be a Nvidia 9800 gtx.

Also, do i just want a 4Gb DDR3 RAM, or a 2 chip 2GB set or something. And do i need to worry about motherboard slot issues?

The most cost effective solution is two x 2 GB DDR3 sticks, giving you a total of 4 GB. Any motherboard which fits the processor you choose will have the appropriate slots for everything. I'd suggest a new copy of Windows as well, as it probably isn't transferable (OEM) and new PCs don't deserve to run an eight year old operating system.

Here's what you can get for $703.92:

AMD Phenom II 720
Gigabyte 770 AM3 motherboard
G.Skill 4 GB DDR3
XFX 4870 1 GB
Samsung 500 GB hard disk
Samsung DVD drive
Cooler Master Centurion case
Corsair 400 watt power supply
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM

The second would be probably take you over some kind of $ mark, the GTS250 is highly acceptable for any decent PC build. but depends on how much your able to spend though, the 275 is of course a higher end card then the GTS250 thus better. But as i said the GTS250 is a very good card.

Personally i prefer EVGA, theres alot of benefits with them, plus their GPU Coolers dont suck. XFX is fine also, but id go with EVGA.

This is asked all the time. From the last thread that included this question:

Everybody has a story to tell about their experiences. But it all boils down to the fact is that they all are supplied with the same kits from AMD(ATI) and Nvidia. The rest is all about marketing and what I said above.

http://www.evga.com/products/pdf/01G-P3-1155.PDF right so does that say i need 2 PCI-e slots to use it? and do the PCI-e slots have to be verion 2?

what it means is it takes up 2 spaces, its a 2 Slot card. so basically you have the PCI-E slot, and if theres a normal PCI right under it, the card covers that slot. thus it requires 2 Slots. and no the PCI-E doesnt have to be version 2, it just means that its version 2 compatible. Also the GTS250 requires a 6pin PCI-E power connector, so make sure your PSU has one. and enough power to use it.

Also Steve, the GPUs themselves may be the same, but the Overclocking and the Coolers for each brand is not the same. every Brand does something different, as you very well know

In any case, XFX and EVGA generally have better cooling capabilities then others from what ive seen, EVGA in my opinion as i own an EVGA 9800GTX+ which is what the GTS250 is.

Well, yah. Did you miss what I wrote:

That's what I meant. Overclocking, coolers, copper, fans, bells, whistles, twizzles, tweaks.. All at a higher cost.

I even said "higher quality parts" so that no one could say that I wasn't giving any credence to those who find this kind of thing valuable.

For example, if you don't want to go through the hassle of overclocking a 260 you buy a superclocked or an upcoming superclock. They perform a little better than without. But then you will have some one say if you recommend one in thread, "but why pay for something you could do yourself."

Just like if you say, "I bought a 260 with better cooling." Then, someone will say in your thread. "That was a waste of money. Stock cooling is all you need unless you overclock."

Then, someone else will say, "I overclock my 260 with stock parts." Then some one will say....

You can't win.

No, you do not need two PCIe slots; it's a dual slot card which means that the card is so big it will block out whatever slot that is directly below the PCIe slot.

You don't need PCIe v2 either, v1 will work just as well.

How much are you paying for that card?
