Unless Valve are working (or intend to be working on) Episode 3 and Portal 2 together - I think that is a good possibility.

Indeed. Although, would you trade off EP3 coming out next January for EP3 being released alone . . . or wait until 2011 for EP3 & a Portal 2 being released together?

That's a good question actually. If the story connection isn't any more significant than it was in Portal/Episode 2, then I'd go with the first one, no question about it. As much as I loved Portal, I can wait for a sequel. On the other hand, if it's required from a story aspect, to release them together, then I would have to agree with Valve's decision, if it comes to that.

"So is it all coming to a huge end after Episode III?

Lombardi: We're gonna wrap it all up, put a bow on it - the G-Man is Gordon's father... it's all good."

I chuckled at that.

Waiting until 2011 for Ep3 isn't the end of the world for me as a gamer, since Diablo III will not be released next year either and I've waited for that game more than 8 years now.

Sierra asked a good question though. 200+ people working on TF2/L4D/L4D2 updates and Episode 3, Portal 2 ? That's some excess manpower right there. He can twist his words all he wants but 6 to 9 months was the promised deliveries between the episodes in the beginning. For sure they would have been far shorter and I feel no where as good or polished. The delivery schedule was fubared from the start though we got a better product I think. When they couldn't meet that deadline they owed it to us to tell us that they had misjudged the amount of time they would take, not just leave us hanging. Valve however doesn't communicate well at all. Interviews don't count not everyone sees them. They do however have this wonderful medium to communicate with us called Steam with millions of users and they don't use it.

Total silence over Ep3 isn't right. they were shocked at the backlash to their reveal of L4D2 because they appear to have a disconnet with their base. There was no demand for a sequel to L4D. True some wanted content for L4D1 that they felt was promised yet not delivered but no request for a sequel. Most of us were just hoping for looking for just a little tiny bit news about Ep3. Anything on Portal or God forbid CS2 being gravy. CS2 would not have gotten me mad as I got at the E3 reveal of L4D2. Even though I don't play CS I would have been excited for a CS2 for those that do! They have certainly waited the longest. I was mad at the casual way they seemed to brushed us HL2 fans off as if we didn't count any more because they have a new money maker.

I want Valve to make lots of money. They are in business to make money. You don't however treat us like mushrooms and expect us to be happy about their latest toy thats a polished up version of the old.( Not dissing the game.I've played the demo and like it) Are you going to trade customers. Having both is so much better for the company. I have several series of books in my library that have several more books out that I have never bothered buying because the author can't be bothered to finish the story. The tight lipped attitude Valve has taken with Ep3 is moving me more and more toward saying to hell with it. If it's not coming out for 3/6/9/12 years just tell us and move on!

I concur. No CS 2.

Did you know that Minh's making a new game though?

I think one of the reasons they don't wish to communicate with us through Steam News on these types of subjects, is because it's embarrassing in a way. It's important to have that dialogue with your fans, in whatever form, but I guess they don't want to take it that far. I mean they're not our friends or something like that, it's still a company that has to hold a certain distance. I wish it weren't like that, but it is. The bigger the company, the wider the gap.

Your last point reminded me of a foreword by Stephen King in one his Dark Tower novels, where he spoke about an older fan writing to him, asking him to finish the series before he dies. And I thought that was brilliant, although sad for the reader of course. Recently I found out that King wants to continue the series, so I hope that man (or possibly a woman, can't remember) didn't find out about that.

Dark Tower isn't DONE? I need to find a copy of 2 somewhere...

OT: I really do believe Valve will have some news for us by the end of the year or early next year. HOPEFULLY BY MY BIRTHDAY IN JANUARY!

I don't think a promise was ever made at any time regarding release schedules for the Episodes. Merely expected development intervals and target dates.

right...

So then, I'll come back NEXT fall, again, to see if I can get 1 game released in 3 parts, in rapid succession, for about the price of a single full game.

Still waiting on the Black Box, bye.
