I shall support your fight for a good cause!

I can only imagine that it would take one email, preferably including the link to the wikipedia entry, to make the supplier of that list aware of this minor spelling error and, furthermore, should take them about five mouse clicks and two key strokes to fix it.

I suppose I can see what you're jarated off...but I think Valve's thinking behind not necessarily fixing it is because it's simply an 'S'. One letter. I'm sure that contacting the company and getting the name of a country changed is difficult, so doing it for 1 letter simply isn't practical.
Again, I understand, but honestly if Steam had "American" in their list it wouldn't bother me to such an extent. It's not like it really matters, everyone knows they're "The Bahamas" just as everyone knows it's "America" or "England" or whatever.

I've posted an explanation of the rationale for not fixing it before. Obviously, the fix is far more involved than "five mouse clicks". Wikipedia isn't a reliable source. Any change that we make to our own copy of the data means it's incompatible with any update that we might receive in the future. Since the data provider hasn't formally announced EOL for that product, they still might issue an update. If they do, then our changes would be obliterated when we accept the new data.

I've identified another source for the data we need, and I'm looking at the legal issues of consuming it. Even if we can green-light the contract, the work to consume a different format for the same data is pretty substantial, and is not a high priority.

Hello Mike,

your explanation is perfectly reasonable and I believe everyone understands that you can't just fix this yourself for the reasons you've stated.
However, my thinking was that the provider of this data product might appreciate a short, informal notice from one of their customers regarding minor errors like this so they can further improve their services. If they decide not to take actions because of the in comparison low priority of this issue then that of course is beyond your control.

Best Regards

Thank you all I wanted to know is that someone is at least trying to fix it. In the future I would suggest don't tell someone - yes there's a problem but here is why we are not going fixing it and won't say when you even plan to fix it in the future. As I said before I don't expect this to be fixed in a day or month especially with all the major updates coming but eventually. Its already been like this for what a year or two now. Paperduck suggestion seems reasonable why won't the supplier correct the list.

thanks for the support Paperduck

@MovieMan999 The missing s didn't really bother me that much but steam unwillingness to say they will even work on it eventually instead of giving me why they won't/can't fix it really bothered me.

Ah, I see. That makes more sense, then. XD
Mike was nice enough to provide that so I guess...case (or topic, as the case may be) closed?

We don't schedule software development; I don't know when the fix will be available. I also can't guarantee that it will be available, as it is possible that the licensing terms of the data source I have found are unacceptable.

I have said that we are working on the issue; you can confirm this by reviewing my notes in this thread and the other threads where this issue has been raised. I'm not sure how I could have been clearer, and am surprised that you've managed to completely misunderstand my posts.

The supplier of the data no longer updates the product; that explains why they won't correct the list.

Thanks for the answer I guess I hope its accepted but you never mentioned anyone was working on this until yesterday in this thread or ticket from months ago and there are no other threads on this.

The supplier no longer updates the product hmm kind of contradicts some stuff said earlier but anyway I guess you can close this.

I'm sorry that you can't find them as I've been very forthcoming about the state of the matter.

I have sent a similar issue to Steam support about the absence of my country Macedonia and the support tech had no idea about the fact that this has been discussed at length here in the Community forums.

I read the FAQ related to this issue and Mike's responses.

I would say that it is probably a few orders of magnitude more important to have an up-to-date country list than a whole toponym list (that includes cities and such).
An up-to-date country list can be easily generated from your providers "dirty" list by cross referencing it with the list of UN member countries, which is updated on the UN web site most accurately. Here is a link:
http://www.un.org/en/members/index.shtml

You could easily extract just a simple list directly from the site, runtime cross reference it with the list you get from the provider and populate the country dropdown list with the intersection of the two sets. Doing this before presenting the profile settings form to the end user would ensure accuracy.

I doubt a lot of people would complain that they cannot select the specific city they live in if they can select the country.

Sorry to hear you are same boat as me at least my country is in albeit incorrect. Its been well over a year i don't think this is on any type of list or priority to fix. Business/revenue wise we are small fry to them customer satisfaction doesn't apply to us. :/ Maybe time to mail one of those tech sites like ars tech i notice as soon as they post an issue like this one http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2...0-in-games.ars
It gets worked on.
