Under the specs, it says a broadband connection is required. IS this referring to MP, or does the game require a connection to play and/or save?

You need an internet connection in order to have your stats and achievements from Camapaign and Skirmish posted to Steam.

You can play Campaign and Skirmish off-line otherwise.

I heard the unpatched version of the game was broken, so you'll have to have a connection to download the updates from steam. Afterwards you can play in offline mode.

You need an internet connection to download the game-fix (game came bugged on the DVDs), and subsequent patches as well as of course multiplayer.
Campaign and Skirmish can be played with Steam in "Offline Mode", however.

Okay, thanks guys. The way it was worded as being under the system requirements didn't seem very clear to me.

Yes, you need to activate the game at least once with Steam. After that you can run Steam in offline mode.

Wanted to post this since it comes up periodically:

Offline mode

So there's no issues if someone inadvertently skips a step.
