Instant kicking/banning from games

I bought this game to play online with games, and every session I join I get booted within five seconds of the race starting. This even happens with games that I create myself, and I've never been able to play a game online since buying. I've looked around for solutions and one post suggested going straight to multiplayer from the game menu. This did not help even though I've done it three consecutive times.
