Fix for lightning problems

If you are one of those people that have the problem of no lighning at some levels, then this fix is for you (SkyNinja ).
I founded a fix which fixes this bug and possibly other bugs.

1 - Download GCFScape here: http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?c=76
2 - After downloading it and installing it, open the "half-life 2 content" gcf in the steamapps folder.
3 - Extract the "maps" folder.
4 - After extracting it, copy the "maps" folder to Program Files/Steam/steamapps/your username/Half-Life 2/hl2
5 - Run the game and have fun (if you want).

Dont worry, the achievements still working and the effects will appear as before.
This fix will probabily fix other problems, like buggy skies and missing decals (my guess).

Sorry for my bad english and I hope my fix works for you.

EDIT: Aparently, Valve has deleted some maps from the original HL2 GCF, I dont know why. So, this steps doesnt work anymore. To fix the lightning and the skybox problems, download these two fixes here: http://rapidshare.com/users/O9KBCP
Thanks to ljbade for all the work on this problem

And also, can some moderatr change the title of the thread to "Fix for lighting problems with non-HDR graphics cards" ?

Does this still use the OB engine?

Or does it revert to 2004?

For me, it worked like a charm.
But, do you have the lightning problem?

Skybox is properly aligned and area lighting looks how it should after using this method.
The over bright bloom as seen instead of hdr is still present.
Great find! Thank you.
I had completely forgotten about GCFScape.

Thanks mezule!
Hey, I recommend to do a complete walkthrough of HL2, to see if theres any bugs. If yu find a bug, tell me!
Ah, and also, If Valve recompile all the HL2 maps to have HDR, this fix will not show the HDR effects. So when Valve release that, delete this fix.
But, if you have a poor graphics card (like me - Intel GMA 950) that cannot show HDR, its beter maintain this fix for better graphics quality.

I have the opposite effect...all the lighting is TOO bright, Ravenholm is now set in midday it seems. The Sky is dark, but everything else is 100x brighter...is it just me? My graphics card is fine, the game used to work like a charm before the update...

After doing this fix, type in the console mat_fullbright 0. It should work.
But, to be honest, I dont like this update AT ALL. Valve has destroyed all the awesome community-created content for Half-Life 2: skins and mods doesnt work anymore, unless they are converted to source engine 2007.

Also, the old HL2 had that "nostalgic" effect ~present on us during gameplay: seeing the old graphics, the old gameplay. Now, Valve destroyed that felling. For me, the game is less enjoyable than before.

But, now what we can do, isnt it?

I have run the broken maps through vrad to add the non HDR lightmaps (as well as the existing HDR ones), and changed the skyboxes to the non-HDR version (only in the second patch)

Download them both here and extract the files to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\[SteamID]\

Now when you load the maps with HDR off it should have shadows again, and the skybox will no longer be stretched.

I had to do this because Steam decided to delete the old map files from my "half life 2 content.gcf" to save space or something like that.

Update:
I have fixed the download link to enable more downloads.

I have also uploaded another patch that you can install over the top of the first patch to fix the skybox.

Only thing I haven't fixed is the skyboxes (most noticeable in d1_eli_01)... I could put the non HDR one in, but then it would break HDR mode...

The problematic skybox is sky_day01_08 in case any mappers/modders know what is needed to fix it.
Downloading now. I understand this will replace the fullbright maps with normally lighted maps?

Yes, it will override the broken full bright ones in the GCF.

Make sure you do mat_fullbright 0 as well if it doesn't work.
