We all understand your point, but the news article associated with the announcement of Alien Swarm clearly states that Valve hired the team 2 years ago, and it's pretty safe to say that a LOT of development has happened between then and now simply looking at the different visual art style and improved source engine alone.

Black Cat already had their mod finished and playable long ago for UT2004. It's a remake. Yes, a lot of work, but all concepts were thought through already

Thank you! a million times thank you! ALL HAIL ALMIGHTY VALVE!

Other deadbeat publishers and developers take note, look at Valve on how to run things.
I totally agree with your post, and I'm repping you, but how many valves are out there? Also, when did valve find Excalibur?

I've done mod work for Valve (DoD and DoDS)...this is how they work. They have people assigned to certain projects and then, so they don't burn out, they allow them to work on other projects they want to work on. Sure, as a business they have to work towards a common goal (getting a game gold and this team worked on for-profit projects at Valve) but as a privately owned business they don't have the "board" or "stockholders" forcing them to do anything in the incessant march towards more and more profit.

It's just Gabe and his team of merry men/women...and I think they really do this for fun first and to pay the bills second. Couple that attitude with Steam (profit generator) and you get a work environment where really smart people can thrive. I'll bet it's not unlike working at Pixar in a way (the Mouse even understands they need to stay out of the way there).

Valve: I think I love you more than is healthy.

Well, that's probably not possible, but you get the idea.
