Is this playable on LAN despite the online servers being taken offline?

Hi all, this is a sweet game, great value at £4 and brings back good memories. Now I know the online components were terminated sometime ago but has anyone been able to get the LAN mode working if it doesnt rely on that aspect? Ive tried the create account option, which failed presumably for that reason - there are literally no servers, however it doesnt register on the LAN when I host a game on the network.

Basically if it does still work on a LAN, that would be a sweet bonus. Anyone?
