Quick question(s)

Okay i've been looking at this game for a few days now and im debating on buying it or not. Is this game sandbox, like how prototype and the GTA games are? Or is it a level to level kind of game, like how DMC games are? Or is it like GoW and Half-life, where you CAN usually return to past areas, but its either a hassle or pointless? And if it is like Prototype and such, how is the sandbox? Is it fun to run around and explore or is it rather boring?
And last thing, would you recommend this game or Star wars: Knights of the old republic
