No worries, Madjack. I know you've got a lot on your plate right now (or at least I hope so). I actually have all of Steam running as administrator due to an issue with launching Mass Effect. It should technically spawn TU with admin rights as well, but I'm testing your suggestion right now.
... Okay, unfortunately that didn't get it. Even tried changing it for all users but I still get the black window then nothing. No magic commandline switch to make it generate some logs? I'd love to provide more info but can't find anything useful. QB |

It sounds like it's not even getting the chance to start a log as the engine isn't getting past basic initialising. Possibly a conflict somewhere. Another user was having something similar happen - turned out to be sound drivers. This is what he posted; Quote:

Hmmm... Well, my computer was a fresh install with stock drivers, but I can try it anyway. Maybe driver updates leave bits and pieces that I wouldn't normally look for. It's worth a try.
Out of curiosity, has anyone ever tried running it in Cedega? I dual-boot my computer with Ubuntu and it actually got farther along running it in Wine. |

If there's no driver conflicts listed in your device manager, I'd tend towards it being your vid card that the game's engine doesn't like. I'm not familiar with what options this card has regarding shared memory etc - is there anything there you can try tweaking? Such as setting it to dedicated memory only? |

There's no option for dedicated memory. It's in an ultraportable laptop. I'm starting to suspect it isn't the graphics card though, since I can run it in Wine and get the resolution select screen. That means the graphics engine at least comes up, it just crashes when I go to change resolutions. I'm seriously thinking about trying it in Cedega to see what happens.
In other news, I got it up and running on Windows 7 x64 on my work computer, which is running an Intel GMA 4500 integrated graphics controller with shared memory. Hmmm... I wonder if I might get any interesting output if I ran it from a DOS prompt... QB |

Tank Universal Demo, Win7 x86_64
So, if you're wondering why the supposedly-patched-for-win7 Tank Universal Demo is still managing to crash your Win7 x86_64 Nvidia system, here's what I've found as of 06-04-2010:
Despite the fact that the Tank Universal Demo was patched to v1.26 in January or February, Steam is still distributing v1.25, which will crash Win7 x86_64 Nvidia systems HORRIBLY (do not pass go, do not see BSOD, crash GPU so hard nothing short of a power cycle brings it back to life). Shame on Steam and the Tank Universal developers for letting this situation/problem linger needlessly for literally months after a fix was compiled. Steam users interested in trying the demo? Forget the steam version, get a newer version with win7 patch from tankuniversal.com. And Jeers at all responsible for this situation. |

Hmmm... That's odd. I'm running 1.26 off Steam. Maybe yours isn't patching for some reason. Try deleting the local content and then re-downloading it.

![]() Ok - mea culpa chromal - I should have checked that the new demo had been swapped out - as far as I was aware, Steam had been informed of the new demo version. Crap. I'm working through my publishers when it comes to things like that (dealing with Steam), so I'll see what's gone wrong. Last edited by Madjack66: 06-06-2010 at 07:13 AM. |

So it's only the demo version that was at 1.25?

In another bit of bizarre news, I tested TU on a very similar laptop with the same CPU, the same motherboard chipset, the same shared memory situation and the same family of graphics board (same generation but lower version) and voila! It works. Go figure...

A footnote
Just a quick footnote. I had to reload my laptop from scratch a few days ago. Decided to try TU today, and lo and behold, it works flawlessly! I still suspect that it had something to do with me installing a pre-windows 7 version of TU first and then updating, however it could also have had something to do with the previous install of Win7 being an upgrade from Vista.
Anyway, long story short, it works now. ![]() QB |
