Avira Antivir detects TR/Unpacked.gen trojan in NWN2.exe

Hi,

Just downloaded Neverwinter Nights 2 from Steam and immediately Avira AntiVir detected TR/Unpacked.Gen trojan located in NWN2.exe I hope that this is a false positive, I do not want to run this game until I get a confirmation of this, any other people having this issue?

False Positive. You're good to go. This was confirmed even when there was only CD/DVD retail releases. It's old news. Avira is just a touch too aggressively paranoid (and apparently can't be updated to reduce the hassle factor of using it -- which is why I switched to BitDefender from Avira -- Avira's Customer Support is not quite as bad as Atari's [read, Atari's is Non-Existant] but it was close.)

There is another thread here somewhere that already discusses this, but rest assured, upon release and with the release of the Gold Edition, then with the uptick of purchases that came in with SoZ (That's Storm of Zehir, the 2nd Expansion) we saw a lot of these kinds of posts in the old Bioware Forums and Avira, occasionally Norton (which is a resource pig IMO) and McAffee (which is a resource cataclysm and should be taken out and shot) showed the game files to be secret Trojans.

They're not. At some predetermined hour, your computer is not suddenly going to go online and spam the email boxes of all your contacts with some worm, because you installed NWN2. It's okay, you can install it.

At Avira they double checked the NWN2.exe and still claim that the file is not original.

This file is unpacked and it's not the original executable file. So the detection will not be removed.

So what now?

That is up to you. I do not know what it takes to put a game on steam, so maybe the main exe needs something added.

You have to ask yourself a question, did Steam sell you a Trojan (doubtful)
or is your AV generating false positive (I'm sure this is the case)
and continue from there.

I have white listed my entire Steam directory, and so this doesn't cause an issue. In the past this was annoying. Avira are refusing to remove the check, and so this may be the only way.

I also don't think the nwn2.exe file is a virus/malware. However there is a history of Steam hosting cracked .exe for some old games to get them running (probably the publisher's fault). So it might be the case here. But I still think even that's not very probable.

NWN2 exe is not "cracked" double click it and it will launch steam, it has triggers to start steam.
