If you get Contracts, it was designed to basically retell the story of the first two games, in the lead up to the release of Blood Money. It doesn't replay every mission, but enough that you get the backstory.

For not Replaying is a good point but I think if one has not played them justifies motives as films and often games release prequels based on the fact that they've got questionable mysteries to be answered.

Blood Money was the best one IMO, as far as controls go and game play. Contracts was fun to play through too. If you can afford it just get the entire package and play from the first one. If you play the later games first you might get frustrated with the way the controls are setup and the limitations of the first game. You will appreciate the changes more if you play Codename 47 first.

I'd play Hitman 2 first then Blood Money. Codename 47 and Contracts can be missed out.

Definately buy Blood Money. Its the first I have played and I actually only bought the complete set for this game, because I lost my other copy. Its hard to get into the old ones after playing BM, because its just so damn good and way superior to the others.

I've been playing the Hitman series since Codename47s release in 2000, and if you skip Hitman 2 altogether you're completely ignoring one of the best games of its generation.

I will admit that you shouldn't play Blood Money first as I'm sure its hard for new players to get used to the old controls. However you must have a real talent if you can state that Blood Money is the superior game without having played the rest of them. Bravo, aren't you just so special.
