Rome - gfx bug - Black Flags

Downloaded the rome demo which runs fine, except that all the flags are rendered incorrectly. They all show up black, which makes tracking troops a royal pita.

Any ideas?

Win7 Ultimate x86
Q6600
8800 GT

Desktop composition diabled? where would that be? I have it running in compatability mode.
