If you like Risen (almost a certainty, despite the weird ending), then go back and try Gothic 1 and 2 (if you are cool with less polish and less refined graphics and controls).
I don't think Risen is very polished, I think G2 is moreso. Fewer bugs with Risen, but some things are simply incomplete (a bunch of animations, combat needs a lot more work, graphics engine is pretty poor looking...). I think they had to choose to leave certain things imperfect because of time. The sequel will be much more refined, I'm sure. I've already read that it will use a new graphics engine.

We aren't on Metacritic so you all might not stumble upon it in your normal travels.
This review was right on the money, although one thing that wasn't talked about at much length was the story, or rather the lack thereof.

RPG'ers have come to accept these days (sadly), that a game will deliver a single chapter in a game. Gothic 4 didn't even achieve a single chapter. The "story" was essentially 1 quest which starts between 5-10% into the game, and is never actually concluded. You kill the final boss and the game just abruptly ends, credits rolling.

The sale price of $25USD was even too much to pay for this game. The only way Jowood is making sales is because reviews for this game haven't been as honest as crispygamer's.

I certainly won't be buying any more of their games in the future.

Note that Arcania also contains SecuRom DRM if that has any bearing on your decision.

I know, but I don't care about the DRM's which have revoke tools. Also they will remove the DRM in future I think.
